Redstone is an amazing thing in Minecraft: you can use it create traps, mechanisms, even simple CPU logic systems. But there is one thing that can be a real pain when creating these things, and that's the fact that you can't carry redstone current upwards. Sure, you can create stairways to have your redstone current gradually incline, but, there isn't a way to have it go completely vertical.
That is why I propose the idea of gears. These things were originally going to be added in the early versions of Minecraft, but were later replaced by redstone. Gears would directly address the issue I previously stated, by creating a way to send current upwards. Plus, they would probably be able to carry current further than redstone dust.
Here is how they would work: you would craft them, probably from iron in a circle-ish shape, and you could then place them on the sides of blocks. By connecting them from top to bottom, each gear would spin the next, and you would have an upwards current! This would greatly simplify certain mechanisms, and make it all-together easier to create many things.
Now, to power them, there would probably be some kind of transformer block, which would transform the electrical power of redstone (the redstone would be connected to one of the sides of the block), and transform it into mechanical power, which would be the gears turning each other in succession. The block itself would look something like half of an upside-down dispenser maybe, and the top half would be half of a gear, the gear that would turn the first full gear after it. I haven't yet figured out the recipe for the transformer block.
So, this is my idea. Any suggestions for this suggestion? Post them in the comment section below.
I love gears from an aesthetic standpoint; they are very appealing and I would like to see them reintroduced to Minecraft somehow.
However, this is not the way it should happen. The idea that mechanical energy would travel farther than a redstone current is not logical; there is a huge amount of energy lost from mechanical transmission. Just as a method of transferring signals vertically is a very bad concept. Like Strottinglemon said, sticky redtone or redstone wires would be much better.
If gears would to be added, it would be in a device, not as a craft able device component.

Anyways, while gears are cool, I think sticky wire with slimeballs and redstone would be a much better solution.

Its easy and doesn't require much effort.

However, I don't want them to power things.
