What if there was an improved workbench that gave the player a 4x4 crafting area instead of the 3x3 one they get from a regular workbench? It could be made from a 3x3 square of iron blocks, and my reasoning behind it is that it could give a sort of sense of technological progression as the player lasts longer in the game, like how you get the ability to make better units and such as you progress in an RTS.
With an improved workbench new items could be added to the game for the player to craft from common materials (wood, stone, etc) that aren't supposed to be available to them early on.
The problem with 4x4 space, is that it lacks a center line. There is no way to lay a line of materials down the middle of that, or in the center of it for that matter. The grid needs to have odd numbered edges, by my way of thinking.

Good idea? Bad idea?
Yeah, good idea, but I and a bunch of other people have suggested it already. I'd go with 5x5 or 6x6. Not 4x4. That's too small a difference. At least I know someone's on the same page as me! Here's my thread: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9338

First off. Let's go by some logic here. The only "reason" to get a bigger crafting table would be so that you can fit shapes that have one dimension that is bigger than the previous one could fit. i.e. You can't make a shovel in a 2x2 because a shovel is 1x3 (the first number is "x" (horizontal) the second number is "y" (vertical).
We're assuming tables will never be in any shapes other than squares, because that's just weird and complicated/lame. All tools are 3x blocks high. This restricts them from being crafted in the 2x2 inventory. Obviously if you had a 4x1 item or something, then it would restrict it from being constructed in the crafting table. Here's where I get to the point: WHY would you need a middle line? Imagine a pickaxe but with a longer handle (maybe you can mine farther away now?) It would still fit just fine into a 4x4 block. I dunno. Because if you make a 5x5, then you're going from a total of 9 blocks to 25 blocks. The first change is a 4 to 9, then we go from 9 to 25? It seems a bit drastic. Although because I'm particular, I would like 5x5 better, but I feel like it would be less practical for a tier that's right after a 3x3

Rule number 1 of Minecraft: Never mine the ground under your feet. Ever.

The widest tools are 3 wide as well, and fit directly down the center of it. As a result, I build just about everything center-oriented in the crafting table, just because of that pattern. It looks better and appearance is substantially more important to me than a LOT of other things. Finally, the total number of spaces wouldn't be as important as the ability to create clear and logical geometric arrangements. Having everything oriented off to one side or the otehr is strange.

One of the important aspects of this specific suggestion is that the advanced workbench is expensive to build, so the player will be cut off from crafting "higher level" items until they've obtained enough iron. Does anyone have comments on that particular part of the idea?

It's an okay idea. I like the idea of just sticking two workbenches together, like chests, but you're right, that is rather easy.

It should take 8 Iron blocks to make, and a single gold block.
The amount of advanced items to be made from this would be quite high. Example of items suggested already on the forums, boats, automatic diggers, teleporters, and the ability to combine stronger materials together then diamond (if they were included).
I would find this very expensive, and would take a bit to gather these recourses.
On whether it should be 4x4 or 5x5: That is going to be dependent on the number of new items added to the game as well as the numbers of new ores that would be introduced. Simply put, i doubt any of us know until we get a confirmation on what will and will not be included in the future.

All I can say is that things that need a building area larger than 3x3 would probably involve a lot of metal and stone.
Yup. But you're a moron so its different
And you sir are an asshole. However, nobody typically points that out. So I guess you can just shut the f*** up and take your flame elsewhere.
EDIT: This sounds like I'm agreeing. I'm not. I wouldn't call Rubs a moron.
