The problem with that is this: What happens to the materials used if you switch? Do they just leave your inventory? I think that your idea, while good, would be too risky if you were to accidentally switch.
And most players in PvP have armor, don't they? So the 5-8 hearts (I'm not sure on the damage. I think 5 hearts is too little, but I don't want it to insta-kill) would be lessened most of the time.
Well, I'm not much of a fan of craft-based reloading anyway. I think that the ammo should work like a bow. It is in your inventory until you fire. When you fire, and not before, ammo is consumed. You can only fire a "loaded" gun, but the gun is unloaded if you switch it out, meaning you can't just ready a bunch of guns and use them one after another.
well different arrow types ill agree with but firearms are a no...
a game set where we have no one else to accompany us excepting wolves villagers and hordes of baddies. A gun would be interesting but then it would add no challenge to the game thus limits the interest in it.
personally a catapult would seem more appropriate for this games design since
a.) hard to use
b.) can finally launch that TNT into that stupid cavern filled with creepers
c.) Act as a defensive weapon when there's huge waves of people coming after you

Actually, if I were to want a hard-to-operate, stationary weapon, I would prefer a cannon. The kind that launches large balls of stone or metal, and nothing else. First of all, I don't think we should have a more effective way to launch TNT. Second, the catapult would require too much special physics coding, to my way of thinking. Finally, a cannon can be more easily added to a boat, and I very much feel Minecraft could use some proper ships.

I'm with Anon, I would prefer a cannon to a catapult. But that's beside the point of this thread."A gun would add no challenge to this game" Dispensers added no challenge, aside from player-made traps (PvP, essentially). Redstone repeaters dded no challenge to the game, on the contrary, they made redstone contraptions much easier. Not everything has to add challenge to the game. Unless you meant to say, "A gun would make the game have no challenge". In that case, you are very, very wrong.

And yet you call me monster.
I'll say I'm not for nor against the idea, but to me it doesn't seem to fit the vanilla of Minecraft. Like, if guns were added I would feel like it didn't belong there. Get me? :mellow.gif: Like imagine the development of ranged weapons. We didn't go from bow and arrows to suddenly muskets. We went (If I got this right) from bow and arrow, to crossbow, to cannons, to hand cannons, to muskets. (That might be incorrect, but you get me at least.) Without those other things, I'd feel a little confused as to how "Steve" suddenly got the mechanical genius to make a firearm with no previous knowledge of projectile weapons other than the bow and arrow.
Personally i feel more advanced weaponry such ass nukes and fighters jets should be added for people after they beat the end.
Absolutely no? For the same exact reasons listed above.
Also, adding to the arguement... why do we need more weapons? Diamond weapons are perfectly adequate in taking care of enemies, and require next to no skill to kill something with. In my opinion, if anything should be 'added' to Minecraft, it should be contraptions, tools, anything to add to the atmosphere of the world, or possibly realms below the surface, since it is kind of centered around mines.

No, I don't get you. You're probably thinking about the more high-tech weapons like Desert Eagles, M-4's, AK-47's, and the like. This thread isn't about them. It's about the low-tech, piece-of-crap weapons like muskets, flintlocks, etc.
EDIT: And about your edit: We sure as hell didn't go from iron tools to pure diamond either, now did we? And what about juke boxes? Those didn't come until the 1800's.
If I helped in any way, don't click that little green +, instead tell me how much you liked the post. (Only those who are incapable of earning rep the hard way have to beg for it in their signatures).

Well, if Steve knows how to hammer iron into tool shapes, then he could make a simple firearm. But still, I would like a crossbow along with a gun and bow.
And the combat aspect in Minecraft needs to be improved, i.e. more weapons, more enemies.

The explosive arrows are a good idea... but isntead of a metal tube filled with gunpowder, I would use the Blaze Rods.
How can you possibly use blaze rods in a gun? We don't even know what they do, aside from the fact that they can be ground into powder, and from that, I don't think that they would make very good barrel material. Unless you meant, "replace the gunpowder with blaze powder (or whatever it's called)." We don't know if they're flammable, much less explosive.

I'm not even clear on what a Blaze rod is. Is it solid? A tube? Does it burn or is it cool? I know it can be ground into powder. That's about it.
to my knowledge it is a flaming rod that burns hotter and longer than coal, so it has similar properties to coke in that respect, while it's powder imbues a potion to grant a strength bonus, so basically it wouldn't make a good barrel as the heat generated would probably set of the gunpowder...
How about making the bullets like that, but replace the paper with gold nuggets? I am not sure about how many bullets you should get, but it should give a lot.
The gun should be made like this: .
You should make a gun charge like this (shapeless recipe): .
It would give 4 gun charges and the flint and steel would be returned, but take 1 damage. You would combine the gun, a bullet, and a gun charge to get a loaded gun. You can shoot it.
1.) That bullet design makes no sense whatsoever. My idea you could craft 4 iron in a block to get 4 bullets, and simply load them by crafting them with a gunpowder and, of course, the gun.
2.) That gun is waaay too 'cheap'. A more reasonable gun would be like so (it's a hand cannon): ( =iron ingots or pipe blocks [an idea I had])
You invade this world claiming it as your own simply by your presence.

I find it really annoying how everyone seems to say guns ruin minecraft, so is alist of reasons people say that, and why they are idiots.
MINECRAFT IS A FANTASY GAME
Err, so? Plenty of fantasies use primitive guns. Take Warhammer or Fable, plenty of guns, but they're still fantasy games. If anything guns make those sort of games seem more fantastical. Besides, if Steve can make advanced killing machines and super computers, then a simple arquebus or flintlock shouldn't be to hard. To prove my point, I'll make a list of fantasies that include guns AND show how loose the whole idea of fantasy is. Fable, Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000, Final Fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons, World of Warcraft, Star Wars, ect.
MINECRAFT IS SET IN MEDIEVAL TIMES
What's your point? There were guns in medieval times, there were guns before medieval times.
Besides, Minecraft isn't set in medieval times anyway, it has electricity, TNT, jukeboxes, diamond tools, mine-carts, all things invented after medieval times.
MINECRAFT IS SUPPOSED TO BE INNOCENT
I've seen plenty of kids games that use modern weapons and just change the name or impact slightly to keep it innocent. Now read this scenario. During the day Steve gets hungry, so he horrifically slaughters an innocent animal and feeds on its carcass. He also kills sheep for his own private comfort. At night demons and creatures of the night come out of the ground to do the same to Steve. The next day Steve heads into a cave, kills all the wildlife living inside and takes apart the tunnels just to find precious gems. Later he travels to another dimension and kills people there (who never did anything except look at him) just to steal some gold. Then he goes to yet another dimension and kills an animal that's the last of it's kind just for bragging rights. How much of this sounds innocent to you?
MINECRAFT IS A BUILDING GAME

I think this guy made it pretty clear that they wouldn't. Even if they were added Jeb would find ways to avoid having trigger-happy maniacs on SMP.
MINECRAFT IS NOT AN FPS

IT WOULD GIVE AN OPENING FOR NUKES/JETS/AK-47S
We already have TNT, yet very few people ask for those things to be added.

NOTCH SAID NO GUNS EVER
He said no modern/futuristic guns ever, direct me to his post and i'll prove it. Besides, Notch's word no longer counts for anything, Jeb's in power now.
still think minecraft shouldn't have guns? if yes, you're either a troll, were raised by a troll or are just really stupid.
The only good reason not to have guns is because they're not really needed, for the moment Jeb should focus on more important things, but when the time comes guns would be a pretty cool addition.
i should note that the behavoiur of some of the haters who try to troll [for lack of a better word] this thread is so OTT and ridiculus that it feels like a parody.

Personally, I'm a fan of craft-to-load, so here's how I'd make it different (and differently useful) from the bow.
1: As previously suggested by someone, it ignores armour. I'm not sure how much damage it should do, but whatever happens, if it hits, it does the same amount
2: There is no drop. This makes it easier to use at long range (IRL, muskets became the weapon of choice because they were significantly easier to use than bows. A good bowman had to be trained nearly from birth, a competent musketeer could be trained in a week).
But weren't muskets horribly innacurate? I hear your cries. The answer? Not really, no... BEHOLD! The reason they were supposedly inaccurate was the tactics of the time-in the Napoleonic era, troops were not told to aim at individual targets, as it was believed that would make them more willing to fire (as they didn't feel responsible for the death). In addition, the Napoleonic flintlocks had no sights, making aiming rather more difficult (although skirmishers still had a good go at it)
3: You have to craft it on a workbench with gunpowder and iron ingot/bullet to reload.
With these three things, there is going to be a substantial difference in how bows and muskets play. For instance:
Scenario 1: On open (ish) ground, me with a musket, my friend against me with a bow. Both of us find some handy ridges to hide behind. I set up my workbench and fire my first shot when I see him pop up. I then reload. Meanwhile, he advances to a better position, flanking me and beginning to open fire. If I want to move, I have to break my workbench first, so I take substantially longer. He also has the faster fire-rate. My increased accuracy and armour-avoiding ability may swing it my way, but his bow's greater flexibility may be useful. His ammo is also much more plentiful.
Scenario 2: Me defending my (very small) fort against him. I have a selection of workbenches set up along the parapet. I can shoot down at him with ease, and reload extremely quickly. If I had more troops, we could use ripple/volley fire to keep up a constant hail of shot, preventing him totally from moving. It is also much easier for me to hit moving targets, so he will have a lot of difficulty advancing. Result: I drive him off easily.
Scenario 3: Him defending his own fortification against me. I sprint to suitable cover and set up my workbench there, whilst he fires arrow after arrow at me. However, if he has set his fort up well, with little cover in front of it, I will be at a massive disadvantage, since I cannot fire on the move. When I advance, I have one shot maximum before I have to hole up again. Unless I can get a lucky sniper shot in, I will be whittled away and killed by his relentless hail of shots.
So the bow is much better on advance, whilst the musket is better defensively. Since the bow can be fired at any time, with no real setup period (charging hardly takes a long time), he is free to move whilst I am not. As well as this, he can keep up a firefight for longer, since arrows are far more commonplace than gunpowder. But how to prevent me from mitigating my disadvantages and simply carring nine muskets?
4: Musket locks (the bit that sets of the gunpowder) can ONLY be found in dungeon/stronghold chests. Thus they are a rare commodity, and even having two would be unusual. This also deals with the 'HOW CAN STEVE MAKE A GUN?' crowd, since merely making a stock/barrel would be relatively easy, the tricky part is the complex mechanical lock.
Anyone like this idea?
I like most of it, but you have no range cap and you didn't specify damage, I think anywhere between 14 (7 Hearts) and 20 (10 Hearts) of damage (enough to make it worthwhile but not so much as to rely on it). It should also be expensive and if you want more shots, you should craft more (expensive) guns and keep them all loaded.
Last suggestion in pvp, the damage should be halved against other players to give them a fighting chance.
No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
