You slaughter animals for their hides and flesh.
You destroy the landscape and gouge out the earth to build your monuments to vanity.
And yet you call me monster.
The game isn't medieval >.> It's fantasy. Bombs fit in Fantasy games, guns don't unless made very well.
And why do bombs fit but not muskets? We have electricity in the form of Redstone, that fits, but not a freaking metal tube on a piece of wood? You know what Fable 2 and 3, Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy: Crystal Bearers, and the upcoming Lunia and Guild Wars 2 all have in common? They are all Fantasy games with guns. And you know what? Here's an interesting pair of quotes:
Quote from Arthur Clarke »
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

It doesn't fit the genre. Would you want Vulcan Mini guns in Legend of Zelda? no.
I'm sorry, could you hear my laughter all the way from here? I think the police have been phoned a noise disturbance complaint...several states over. :laugh.gif:
It doesn't fit the genre? Are you kidding me, or do you just live under a rock?
Fable, Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, The Dresden Files, Anita Blake, Dungeons and Dragons...
They are all fantasy that has guns. I could go on. Maybe you were unaware, but "fantasy" is not tied to any specific time period. In the Star Wars universe, you could say that The Force is a fantasy element. Fantasy can be any era or technology level, and saying that Minecraft is fantasy genre proves absolutely nothing. Please try thinking before you post, in future.

I don't oppose guns because they don't fit with theme historically, or because they don't make sense with the current tech. They do on both accounts.
The fact is I just don't like the concept. I believe I don't stand alone when I say: Mine Craft is NOT an FPS. I'm not saying that guns or even one gun would make it that, but...
I don't like the idea that a person can aim, shoot, and their target will be hit. Arrows give time for a player to evade. Even crossbows won't be UN-dodge-able. Guns are too overpowered. Even if it takes a long time to reload, and they do a lot of damage, you can still aim, fire from a good distance away, reload and fire again before your enemy even knows where you are. They give the game-play a whole different feel.
To sum up my viewpoint:
It's not about theme here. It's about the game-play mechanic.
i find it really annoying how everyone seems to say guns ruin minecraft, so is alist of reasons people say that, and why they are idiots.
MINECRAFT IS A FANTASY GAME
err, so? plenty of fantasies use primitive guns. take warhammer or fable, plenty of guns, but they're still fantasy games. if anything guns make those sort of games seem more fantastical. besides, if people can make advanced killing machines and super computers, then a simple arquebus or flintlock shouldn't be to hard. To prove my point, i'll make a list of fantasies that include guns AND show how loose the whole idea of fantasy is. Fable, Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000, Final Fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons, World of Warcraft, Star Wars, ect.
MINECRAFT IS SET IN MEDIEVAL TIMES
What's your point? There were guns in medieval times, there were guns before medieval times.
Besides, Minecraft isn't set in medieval times anyway, it has electricity, TNT, jukeboxes, all things invented after medieval times.
MINECRAFT IS SUPPOSED TO BE INNOCENT
i've seen plenty of kids games that use modern weapons and just change the name or impact slightly to keep it innocent. now read this scenario. during the day steve gets hungry, so he horrifically slaughters an innocent animal and feeds on its carcass. he also kills sheep for his own private comfort. at night demons and creatures of the night come out of the ground to do the same to steve. the next day steve heads into a cave, kills all the wildlife living inside and takes apart the tunnels just to find precious gems. later he travels to another dimension and kills people there (who never did anything except look at him) just to steal some gold. how much of this sounds innocent to you?

The only good reason not to have guns is because they're not really needed, for the moment Jeb should focus on more important things, but when the time comes guns would be a pretty cool addition.

"NOTCH SAID NO GUNS EVER SO STOP POSTING ABOUT GUNS"
Notch, as far as I have searched (Multiple google searches for 'guns notch minecraft', 'notch said no guns', etc.; a non-in-depth scan through the 'what Notch actually said' thread) has only said that he doesn't want lasers or handguns, because he doesn't like hitscan weapons. The firearm proposed here is none of those (unless you use the 'handgun' term very loosely), therefore, Notch has not rejected the firearm proposed in this thread.

Yes, its true that one can shoot and kill their target from range with ease... provided theyve taken the time to mine the necessary materials to build it and even still to maintain the weapon. I disagree with your logic. Minecraft has always had this sort of tech tree, and technology advancement is part of the games style.
Really theres nothing wrong with handguns, maybe I dont necessarily agree with lasers but handguns should be available (in some form or another) along the tech tree in Minecraft.

Still is referring to the fact that when the original came through, the devs majorly oversold it. It was promised features like learning dialogue options from listening to people talk, having your character grow old, die, and playing on as their descendant, a persistent world that would react and change from your actions...a whole lot of stuff they couldn't deliver on or gave only a dumbed-down form of. It was a good game, but it was nowhere near the genre-redefining masterpiece it was claimed it would be.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
Alright...alright...they oversold original Fable. Let's get back on topic, yes?
So, bows have durability now. That means that they have a new stat. Now, with swords attack speed and accuracy is constant, but durability and damage are variable. With the bow, damage is variable, as is accuracy, speed, and even range, and now durability. Now, here's the catch...let's assume that since a bow can already vary damage, the maximum damage for the bow should be the upper limit of all ranged weapons. However, ranged weapons have more traits that can be changed; speed, range, accuracy, materials...and now durability. So there is a niche for other ranged weapons.
With swords, a progression of incrementing power makes sense. For ranged weapons, however, you already gain a significant advantage over close-combat. Increased overall power would make combat too "safe"...which is not desirable from a gameplay standpoint. Without challenge, it ceases to be a game. However, there is a place where having variations of ranged weapons makes sense; adjusting performance. Let's use races in D&D as an example (specifically editions before fourth). All races have various ability scores, different values to represent performance in several categories. First you have Humans. These are like the bow, they have baseline abilities, neither excelling nor falling short in any category. Each other race gains positives in one or more areas, and negatives in others, so that the baseline still equals zero (note, this is not a perfect analogy, as certain ability scores are given greater "weight" than others). These would be other ranged weapons, such as Slings, Crossbows, and yes, Guns. They would be better than a Bow in some ways, worse in others, so that the overall result is the same. A player would never do "better" than a bow, technically speaking, but rather choose to exchange performance in one area for sacrifices in another, focusing on what they perceive as "better" on a personal level.

This damn "OMG YOU HAZ REACHED YER POSITIVE VOTZ LEVEL" thing is really annoying. I dont even up vote that many people. Anyways I agree for the most part, but your forgetting that the crafting cost can be used as a "drawback" as opposed to making it weaker, so a gun can still have slightly better stats followed by perhaps a few trade offs with the bow (overall still being better than the bow for the most part). I think the muskets stats should be something around does twice the range, is a little less accurate, does 1.5x-2x dmg (bullets were very big in certain muskets back then) and the reload is slightly longer if not equal to the amount of time it takes to charge the bow. Youll find that this puts more favor in the musket in the players eyes than to the bow, but that is not correct. The player may want to save ammunition for the musket for harder enemies or tight spots because of the ammunition cost.
