I love the fact that though this thread was designed specifically for people who support guns, the occasional idiot wanders in and says "HUR DUR! GUN NO FIT IN MINCRFT! NOTCH SAY NO! NO FPS MINCRFT! SMG BOW N AROW FTW! LOL!1!" and they don't even bother putting up any valid argument as to why they shouldn't be implemented in the first place other than Notch saying no, or guns not fitting into the Fantasy realm.
Now, let's take a look at some Fantasy games and movies, as well as some games in this "medieval" period Minecraft seems to take place in in people's minds.
Warcraft series/World of Warcraft:
Guns. Gun everywhere. Does anyone complain? No. Dwarves had the capability to mine the ores, and the gnomes had the capability to engineer a working firearm. Is it overpowered and does it make the MMO into an FPS? No, it doesn't, and it still keeps with it's fantasy theme.
Fable:
Yes, they have guns. Does it mess with the fantasy theme? Not really, no. Does it make it an FPS? Nope.
Medieval 2 Total War:
Why this game? They got line infantry with guns. Yep, working firearms. Do the knights care? Nope. You can charge them alongside this unit, or just charge knights at this unit en masse. They still gotta reload. Bowmen do a better job? Yeah. But they don't have magical bows that magically refill themselves almost instantaneously in stacks of 64. Sounds a bit like a sub-machine gun, don't it, bow defenders?
In reality, bows would still have to be reloaded after one shot, much like the musket is. Bows just get reloaded faster because they don't need to have something shoved down a tube.
Best gun idea ever! I agree, it should be REALLY low tech and pretty expensive to craft, with a long reload time, but does massive damage. It'd be separate from bow and arrows since they need to be charged to fire as of 1.8.
I have an idea for crafting the ammo.

You know how you need milk buckets to make a cake, but they turn into buckets after?
Well maybe to represent lighting a fuse without losing the whole d*amn torch you just need it in the crafting grid to make a loaded gun but it isn't consumed. How's that?

Why do you need paper??
You cant put gunpower in the bullets because it wasent invented at the time. You put the gun powder in the barrel of the rifle. Then you put the ammo.

I have read about 14 pages and man, these guys are starting a flame wars. Fortunately on the 50 page,(WTF so much?) people mostly accept it. First thing,I do like the orignal weapon. What I think of is,that because it is in the genre of a bow(medium range) it should be tweaked. Propeties: Long range(about 64 before it disappears),Medium-high damage(4 hearts without armor piercing),Hard-to-craft bullets(an flint above an iron ingot results into 2 bullets),long reload(about 2 second),only firable when crouched(sneak, but not moving),very loud sound(can be heard up to 32 blocks),huge smoke(obstructs shooter's view),moderate recoil and knockback(forces the shooter and target if shot half a block back), and quite high accuracy. That will make the weapon do well and be unique, and mainly used as a defensive weapon. It will act more like a musket, but it is quite balanced.
As someone looking at some of my posts can see, I m an avid supporter of a firearm in Minecraft vanilla. And I basically agree with the stats presented here. But, I have a unique idea, it has to do with a Minecraft arquebus, but I wasn't sure if I would be violating the rules by posting what seems to me as multiple suggestions in one post.
A pipe block: It would carry water or lava. It could be crafted like so: = (Pipe)
And, here's the 'multiple suggestions' part.
This pipe block would be used, in addition to the standard use, in the crafting of a firearm: :Flint and Steel:
(The recipe is merely an example.)
Good idea, bad idea?
You invade this world claiming it as your own simply by your presence.
You slaughter animals for their hides and flesh.
You destroy the landscape and gouge out the earth to build your monuments to vanity.
And yet you call me monster.
I think that it would be pretty cool to have linefights and trench warfare, especially with the smoke and all. A bunch of players firing at one another from 50+ blocks, with smoke completely obscuring the enemy after each volley, and once ammunition ran low, one side would charge across No Man's Land with swords and axes. It would be pretty atmospheric.
Conversely, they would be excellent hunting weapons as well. Seeing as there's no draw time, unlike the bow (another difference between the two weapons), you're able to have it ready for a quick shot while on the move, but would need to stop completely to reload it. Coupled with the possibility of critical hits, this could make it a proper alternative to bows with both drawbacks and advantages.
Does anyone disagree with me there?

Okay, someone has probably said this already, but you can make the guns reasonably accurate, but make it even harder to reload. First, you would (obviously) load in the powder, then you load in wool to use as wadding, then the bullet. Maybe you could use paper as wadding instead.
also, another idea: what if instead of a bullet you could choose to load 3 flint and then use more wadding to make like a very short range shotgun type blast. first, it would NOT be an instant kill, maybe it wouldn't do any significant damage, but I'm thinking it could cause a 2-3 block knockback on your target and maybe a 1 block knockback on you. I would keep an extra gun loaded this way to buy myself a little time in melee.

The wadding and multi-step reload thing is actually too complicated, it would make the gun pretty much useless.
But, I do like the idea of a multi-shot, shotgun-like blast. A piece of gravel would do nicely, and give gravel a use.

I think this deserves to rise again, even if it was down for only two days.
My opinion on guns:
Minecraft has no official setting, since the dark ages did not have exploding phallic shrubbery and TNT wasn't invented until the 1800's.
As it stands, I believe the arquebus/musket should offset some of the bow's weaknesses, while having drawbacks of it's own.
To put it simply, the musket will be ready to fire as soon as you right-click, while the bow needs time to charge up.
The musket's ammunition should pierce a small amount armor, but not damage it.
SO as to not add unnecessary items to the game, it would consume one iron ingot and one unit of gunpowder every time it is shot, and the bullets will not be able to be retrieved. The reloading animation should just consist of you raising the musket and shaking it a few times. It would take a grand total of five seconds to reload.
Think five seconds is too low? Stop and count to five. In that time, someone could have sprinted towards you, hit you with a sword a few times, or unloaded several full-power arrows into your face.

Why the heck did you bump this thread! Every one knows Notch personally said he not adding guns! What else do you want?

Really? Everyone says that, but no one, no one has shown the twitter/word of notch/whatever site page where Notch himself says, "There will be no firearms of any kind in this game, ever" or something to the same effect.
