Here's my Ideas on cannons from other threads. These would all be deployed and count as independent objects, not landscape.
__________________________________________________________________
I would really love turrets, would be particularly useful in the nether. Can't even step out the front door of my base without ghasts taking potshots (at least the whole thing is made of obsidian lol).
Turrets should come in a few basic flavors:
Scorpion/Ballista style (arrow using)
Cannon (Colonial era ball cannon type rig)
Machine Gun
Flak (fires explosive shots at a slow but steady pace, automatic like the machine gun but shoots slower at about one shot per 2 seconds, explosive about half normal difficulty creeper strength)
Easiest to make would be the arrow users hardest for the Flak.
To craft, the scorpion would require a bow, arrow log and stick in this setup:
A
B St
Lo
The ballista (larger version) is almost the same but requires a bit more:
Lo A Lo
B B B
St Lo St
Cannon would require iron bloodstone/netherrack and sulfur/gunpowder:

The MG requires a tri-pod which requires sticks and Iron:

It also requires a Bullet. The Bullet requires gold, sulfur/gunpowder, and iron
Go Gu Ir
The MG requires Iron, a bullet (Bt), Redstone, a tripod, and a button (Bu)
Bu Rs Ir

The flak cannon due to it's power has the steepest requirements.

Now you can construct the gun itself with 3 pads, 2 barrels, 2 shells, and a sight

Only arrow users would experience projectile drop, the flak cannon would be automated and restricted to flying mobs and have equivalent range and line of sight of a Ghast.
When a player breaks a turret it turns back into a complete usable turret like the workbenches do, if a mob breaks it then it's gone but will drop a few resources required to produce another, no complete parts though.
Aiming includes X,Y axis rotation so up down left right Cannon rotations absolutely should not be restricted to the grid, if you can look somewhere while not aiming, you should be able to aim there (With the exception of a certain angle up and down).
I could see manned cannons having a full turn ability because of the fact that a cannon would be slow to aim and very slow to shoot.
Automated turrets would suffer the same problem as well as a high chance to miss due to AI control rather than player. Distances would pretty much require a battery of guns to take on most mobs. The automated ones should be ammoless due to the fact that they are essentially mobs themselves. You should be able to stack 5 shots in each cannon for the sheer fact that reloading 10 guns after a single volley would get tedious and annoying fast. The cannons would have a mandatory cooldown between shots to prevent spamming of cannonballs. Anything destroyed by cannon fire would not drop any resources, this would do wonders with framerate and make the player unable to rely on the guns for mining purposes, only excavation at a high cost. Manned guns could be aimed and set to go off via redstone wire and any electrical object (pressure pad, button, lever, etc.), this would allow for inventive trap creation.
Cannon ammo should come in several varieties: Normal, Light explosive, High explosive, Grapeshot, Fireball, and Lightball.
Normal is just your average solid metal ball, basically a souped up arrow that can break a single block. Normal Cannonballs are recoverable due to the fact that they don't explode or anything like that. Light explosive is pretty much the blast radius and damage of a ghast shot. (Automated guns would fire this and ONLY this giving a slight risk of accidentally blowing up your stuff making it a potential danger as well as a help) High explosive is about a hard creeper sized blast radius and damage (not quite TNT but close). Grapeshot shoots several projectiles at once that are the size of an average grape, essentially one of the first shotguns, but much bigger (this would not break any blocks, only hurt mobs). The Fireball is a red hot flaming iron ball that spreads a temporary small lava field on impact and lights nearby things on fire. The Lightball is a bright whitish yellow ball that emits light on it's way to it's target and upon impact it doesn't actually break anything, but instead creates a field of daylight level light output 30 blocks in diameter hurting all undead in that area for 10 seconds.
IMPORTANT!!! Only one unit of ammo should be made from one complete recipe like with tools, not four like when making arrows!!!
Normal only requires nine irons.
Ir Ir Ir
Ir Ir Ir
Ir Ir Ir
Light Explosive requires iron and gunpowder/sulfur
Ir Ir Ir
Ir G Ir
Ir Ir Ir
High explosive requires iron and TNT
Ir Ir Ir
Ir T Ir
Ir Ir Ir
Grapeshot requires iron and flint
fl Ir fl
Ir fl Ir
fl Ir fl
The nastiest, the fireball requires iron and a lava filled bucket
Ir Ir Ir
Ir B Ir
Ir Ir Ir
A special anti-undead shell or Lightball would need iron, glowstone dust, and redstone dust
L Ir L
Ir R Ir

In the end it would be very costly to a non-cheating player to maintain more than a 5-6 gun battery. Cheaters like me of course could enjoy it as we see fit, because we cheat (which should not count against you in YOUR OWN single player btw).

So, you think minecraft is medieval huh? TNT(1863)/Dynamite(7 May 1867) and steel railways(1857) in medieval times? I call BS, sure there's armor and swords, but it's NOT medieval. Either give me a source or cram it!
-Because its a nice little detail
-It resembles actually reloading a flintlock (sorta)
-Its something people can get better at with experience rather than just playing an animation each time
-It feels more minecrafty (and is less like every FPS out there)
-It might help balance a bit (depending on how guns are balanced against bows)
Re: Post above suggesting users carry 1gun per inventory slot.
Fair enough, people used to do this with pistols. But thats a remarkably expensive duel, especially if you loose. Also keep in mind that early guns were far inferior to longbows in just about every catagory other than the length of training period and ammunition cost. So why not?
But this thread is suggesting gunpowder for ammo? That's not cheaper than arrows!
oh, and I have no idea why anyone would think it's a good idea to have to go into your inventory to reload.
If you have bullets, it should automatically start reloading, no inventory fumbling.
I've always been against it. I've already stated why a couple pages back, though, so I'm not going to say them again in this post.

~ I've thought about the phrase 'Money is the root of all evil' and I have to disagree. Evil isn't dependant on an object. I say that want is the root of all evil.
Let's say I am in a duel against my evil-self.
I have the Arquebus, and my evil-twin has the bow and arrow.
We are 30 tiles away from each other, jumping and juking everywhere to avoid fire.
We are both unarmored.
Say that my evil-self fires a volley of 10 at me and three of them hit. I take 6 damage.
I return fire with the Arquebus, and luckily I hit. It does 5 damage.
We're nearly even as far as the damage we've dealt and received.
But guess who has to stand-still to fumble through the inventory to reload, and guess who can fire another 10 arrows in a single second.
Guess who can retrieve all the ammunition that missed and use it again without having to manage their inventory.
Let's say we're on a flat plane and I begin firing at my evil-twin as soon as they are at 70 tiles.
The first shot hits, and deals 2 damage.
I reload, and my evil twin moves continuously at 7 tiles/second, and is now 35 tiles away. They are well within the range to use their bow. But let's say for this duel they forgot their bow, and are charging me with their diamond ho.
I fire another shot, and it does 5 damage. 2 shots from the arquebus, and they are not dead.
I reload, but before I am finished my evil-self has already gotten to me.
See what I'm hinting at?
The Arquebus is not a standalone weapon or direct-combat weapon. It is more of a defensive, fortification, or tactical-use type of weapon.
good sir you have how many inventory slots? howmany guns could you hold at one
redo your test but that you fire and switch to your next gun.
Don't forget this.
From the minecraft wiki:
"After sustaining damage from any source, a Mob will turn red in color for a short period of time. During this period, any other incoming damage will not be counted against the mob's total health. For instance, if you attack a mob with a Bow without letting go of the mouse button, the bow's rate of fire will exceed the mob's allowable rate of incoming damage, and several of the shots will not damage the mob even if they land. Arrows that don't deal damage to a mob are reflected off of it onto the ground, and possibly, from a close range, back at the player (resulting in damage). However, if a mob or player is recovering from damage and then receives higher damage, it gets counted. Players are also subject to damage immunity."
I heard minecraft was hoping to get the "steampunk" kinda of vibe.... so why has no-one ever suggested lever action rifles or maybe revolvers? 6 shots and then you have to grab more cartidges from your inventory or if you have it in your quick inv bar then you wait 5 seconds while you load it. Hell, it would be fun to use. Would be about even with the bow because I could get off a couple of well placed shots before they rain down arrows upon me. IF some of you don't know what a revolver is, here is one from the American Civil War.
Ammunition could be rather rare. Lets face it, it would be expensive. (Unoriginal bullet idea, I know)

50% of the time you would drop the empty casings beside you, you could then pick them up when you're done and take them back to a crafting table and get a iron ignot back by putting 3 casings in the crafting table

Which idea? Because a minecart is as high tech when compared to revolver.. Its from the same time period.... the 1800's.
Feel free to quote my sig lol. This game does not have a set "when it takes place" time as far as I've seen, that's one of the things that makes it so great, it takes place whenever the hell you damn well want it to.
Frankly I think the hand held guns ought to take a similar approach to your tools ingame. Start with something notably crappy, like the Arquebus. Then work your way up to the flintlock musket and pistol, then to the muzzle loader rifle (more accurate than the musket due to rifled barrel), then to repeaters and revolvers, and maybe up to semi-auto, but fully automatic weapons should be made only as emplacements that must be set like blocks (but are independent objects still and controllable by the player).
Is anyone going to say anything about my cannons and other emplaced weapons? I really want to know what people think in a thread that can't be shat on (per mod orders) like the last one was.

Cool TNT lobber, but I'm talking about an actual cannon, one that doesn't take hours to set up and doesn't take as much space as a house. 1-2 squares, takes 10-15 seconds to set up from inventory, and doesn't have the risk of blowing up it's user unless the user shoots too close with a specific cannonball. My cannon idea would be line of sight while the lobbers would be great as mortars (get the shot OVER the wall, not hitting the wall) These lobbing towers (while cool) SHOULD NOT detract from an actual cannon's implementation or functionality.
Here is the closest thing I've made to an actual cannon in minecraft, not exactly the most useful thing ever. Yes, it has already killed me once even though It is enclosed and made of obsidian, it recently malfunctioned blowing up the support structure leaving me to fall from above cloud altitude all the way to sea level.
BTW, is there a tag I can use that collapses and hides pictures and other stuff until clicked, the spoiler tags don't seem to work the same way here as the other places I've been.

Accuracy is why the crafted cannon (or gun) would be useful, it's a line of sight weapon that is much easier to aim than a high-angle lobbing device or a bow with it's rapid projectile drop.
Bows definitely ought to be cheaper to use and have more utility uses available (grapple arrow that creates a climbable rope from impact for example), while guns are pretty much exclusively for blowing the **** out of anything you don't like.
