All this talk about history and terms for the firearm are all pretty much irrelevant. It's good for the sake of conversation, but is really not pertinent to the conversation of how guns will fit into the game and how they will be balanced. Same thing with what the real life effective ranges of the hand cannon/musket/arquebus/flintlock.
The Important Facts:
Bow and Arrow Max Range = 55 tiles
Bow and arrow Rate of Fire = 5 shots per second/300 rounds per minute
Proposed Firearm Range = 70 tile optimal + 20 tile falloff (0 damage at 90 tiles)
Proposed Firearm ROF = 1 shot per reload (Reload action, cock action, fire delay ~1 round/8 seconds
To Boil it Down:
Bow and Arrow = Medium Range, Rapid Fire, Low Damage
Musket/Hand Cannon/Flint Lock/Arquebus = Long Range, Slow Fire, High Damage
Regardless of what we call it, a firearm as proposed by the numerous posters in this thread would be balanced in terms of the world as it currently is, a would fit the theme of the game. As for why we don't make the thing a "hand cannon" as RRPG proposed, is because the bow is the uncontested ruler of all things <= 55 tiles range. Instead, it is better to make a weapon that is different in function and terms of use from the bow: a long range, slow firing, high damage weapon versus a medium range, rapid firing, low damage weapon.
What someone does with a modification is not of concern to this thread. This thread is about proposals for firearms and how they would affect the game. What someone does with a modification is not relevant to the discussion, because no amount of balance on our part can possibly account for all the mods out there, as well as the ones yet to be released or thought of. If Notch were to change the range of arrows, the range of firearms would have to be modified as well.
Guns won't happen, Notch said they will never happen. A bow and arrow is enough, but GUNS? People would be making overpowered gun mods.
You obviously haven't read the thread. Maybe you'll notice this is the 24th page? What has been suggested here is not overpowered. If you want to talk about overpowered, the bow and arrow is totally overpowered, it shoots 300 rounds per minute for goodness sake! Also, Notch did not say there will never be guns, he may have stated that he does not like them, but he did not say there will never be guns.
Also, this is a thread for the discussion of guns in Minecraft and their effects on the game. If all you want to do is post about what you think Notch thinks, then don't bother posting (several people have already said what you said anyway) as it isn't constructive or pertinent to the conversation. This is not a vote, this is not yes or no, this is a discussion. If you want to participate in the discussion, keep your posts focused on:
A) What kind of guns could be added to Minecraft (been discussed, community has basically settled on Musket/Flintlock/Arquebus/Handcannon)
:cool.gif: What would the crafting recipe be?
C) How can it be balanced with current weapons in the game (also discussed and you can look the stuff up yourself because I myself have already typed these things out over a dozen times).
How about Blunderbluss or musket? Both of them can be crafted like:
[leather]
Ammo:
[] [] []
[] []
[] [] []
That iron bar means 4 iron balls
I wont suggest modern weapons, colonial era and wild west weapons can fit this game, an AK-47 cannot
Absolutely, right on point there. My crafting recipe is a little different, but then again so is everyone's. May I ask what the leather is for?
Handle, but i think that in colonial era leather was not used to do a cool handle, can be done with wood (I base the weps in colonial era, for the settling and so on)
Ok, here is my own crafting recipe. Tell me what you think:
We should make the musket gun and the ammunition to craft harder, since they're be a good weapon against mobs. I have a kinda complicated suggestion.
We will first strengthen the wood block, but I prefer a log block. We will strengthen it by means of drying the wood. We will make the log lose all its water, and to do that we need to craft the log to be able to handle the heat inside a fernis..
[] [] []
[] []
[] []
It's as simple as that (kinda), then we put that in a fernis. The drying will take long, so it's required to use 2 coals. After drying, we should be able to extract the 2 materials (I'd like to implement the extraction bench for this), separating the iron bar with the strengthened log.
That strengthened log will be used as the material for the musket.
The whole musket gun will be crafted using this : []
Where : = Strengthened Log
The ammunition, or musket balls, is needed to be extremely hard to make, so I'd suggest to make it like this :
[] [] =
[] []
Where : = Unusable Musket Balls
Which will give 4 unusable musket balls (Something which is not really 'polished' or 'smoothened'). These unusable musket balls will only be usable if its 'smelted' in the fernis.
The gun also has a health, so it will wore down with multiple uses, using different materials of bars (Iron, Gold, Diamond)
Musket w/ = 55 uses
Musker w/ = 87 uses (Making gold a bit more useful)
Musket w/ = 143 uses
The reloading system is the same as the first. It will require gun powder and the musket ball to work, and is reloaded one by one.
I know you guys are obsessed with slow firing weapons and muskets, but you could just make it have a clip, like iron + gunpowder could equal a clip that contains five bullets
then you craft the clip onto the gun via your 2x2 crafting grid, and then to reload you have to put the gun back into the grid with another clip, etc etc
I am saying this because:
-gunpowder hasn't been implemented as a block yet and as such it isn't that easy to obtain
-if your gun was your only weapon and you were facing heaps of mobs, you will need more than one bullet
-there will be a slow firing rate to please those who think I am crazy, but 5 bullets seems perfect to me
-also, the gun could have durability, and break after around 50 bullets (?)
just my 2 cents I guess, but yeah, I would use the gun if it is able to have more than one bullet
otherwise, my ol faithful bow will keep my FPS urges satisfied (that or cod black ops)
Ok, here is my own crafting recipe. Tell me what you think:
Musket:
[] [] []
"Musket Bullets"
[] []
[] []
I think that the firearm recipe is unsatisfactory and that the bullet recipe doesn't make any sense. Why should it be a ball filled with powder? It's not a grenade or howitzer round.
= 4 paper cartridges.
= paper
Preferable, there would be a double workbench. (which could also be used to make furniture)
[] [] [] [] [] []
I still don't see why it should have a longer range than the bow though. I think 50-55 tiles should be enough.
And it wouldn't be overpowered, for those who haven't read the thread. In most situations it would be inferior to the bow. It would only really excell in defense of static positions(where you have cover to reload) and boss fights where you want to deal heavy damage.
I would appreciate another use for gunpowder since I find TNT absolutely useless.
this is my first post in minecraft forums so give me some feed back after you read
here is an idea for a non scoped hard to build rifle. take 3 iron bar and put them in a row in the crafting menu like this and do the step twice. you will get two barrel lengths. these will be used later. now to make the stock. place wood, ice, or obsidian in a row on the bottom and place 2 on top of the bottom row away from the left side like this . space this will create a stock. now for the mag. to keep the idea of the gun not
overpowered, the mag will only hold 4 rounds. the mag will be crafted in a u shape.then put the mag at the bottom and put 2 bullets stacked in 2s on top. bullets are crafted like this . now to put the rifle together. put the stock at the back, the 2 barrel lengths in front, mag in the bottom middle. your rifle is ready. there is a 5 second interval between shots.once u are out of ammo, fill the mag again. the rifle will have a single place for the filled mag.
the obsidian stock is for police style looks and lasts 1000 shots. the wood stock is for old styled rifle looks and lasts 20 shots. the ice stock is for arctic warfare style and lasts 100 shots. the barrel will last 100 shots. just a quick thought why not build the barrel out of obsidian for 1000 shots. kick back wont be bad but recharge is horrible. bullets arent fun to make because they use one gp and 2 iron bars. and finally for damage. i think 5 damage sounds good. tell me how i did and i will be more than happy to answer q and a.
I am amazed at this thread. Are you all stupid? and kind of guns, even the olden ones, will ruin this game.there is no way notch is going to implement it, so really this entire thread is 25 pages of fantasising
MOD EDIT: This thread is for discussion of the suggestion, to work out kinks and find ways to make it fit. It's also a way to compile all gun-related discussion into one location for ease of access. This is not a vote. Your objection to the idea of guns in the game is not interesting discussion; do not make any further posts here unless you intend to contribute.
And next time, read the thread-- especially that one part in the first post that, you know, says pretty much everything I just said in more words.
Skimming through the thread, I really don't see why you have to have time-period limitations. The jukebox is primarily a 20th century invention. What's wrong with semi-automatic rifles, especially if there's going to be a PvP multiplayer someday? It's better than button mashing for melee weapons and arcing arrow projectiles don't add all that much. If anything, the standard weapon should be a firearm (albeit not so powerful as to render armor/swords useless) and the arcing projectiles should be howitzer shells.
Actually, artillery would make the game pretty fun. But the weapon set should really depend on preference, though.

its a record player. it was first the 1800s. Yes we should have time limitations.

Too bad Notch said NO GUNS! But actually theres nothing to complain with this kind of gun ideas.
Most gun ideas are thrown out like garbage but this one actually works.

I, personally, believe that when Notch said "NO GUNS!", he was thinking about the type you see in modern FPS games. Guns are still possible in the way this thread describes. At least, I think so.

Of course. That's how I read it as well.
Making a modern pistol would be ridiculous, but all the materials to make a primitive firearm are already in the game.
A musket is the ONLY gun I want to see in the game. All the materials are available. Wood, iron, flint and gunpowder. The gun should be balanced though. The range should be a little bit shorter than the range of a bow but the projectile goes in a straight line. Reloading takes 10 seconds and the bullet cannot be picked back up. The gun can break down after a while and you would have to craft another one. The gun is a one shot kill since, well, its a musket and they pack one hell of a punch. We can craft TNT, so why shouldnt we be able to craft a gun D:

A wise man once said, "A troll feeds on the souls of good people. Feed the troll and you will suffer unforseen consequences."
Personally, I think a gun with a 2 round tube or magazine would be ok. Think about it: With a firing rate of .55 RPS (Rounds per second(In case you're not math savvy, that means roughly 2 seconds to unload both rounds)) to simulate the recoil, a 2 round gun could still save your life if headshots against both mobs and other players were insta-kill. Of course, it would have to be less damage than the musket or whatever, as to reduce spamming of it. ((hopefully) Not every griefer is a sniper at heart))

It's called a jukebox in-game. The phonograph was invented in 1877. We had bolt-action rifles by then and we most definitely had howitzers.
