And your point is that the gun gives kudos or an edge to combat skill, not the whole essence of the game, to which I responded to that with the fact that it would be true, if the gun were indestructible. But since the firearm is not indestructible you still have to use a torch, iron, and gunpowder, for just one measly bullet then you still have to use iron and wood to build another one once it's spent or to have it loaded and ready for combat.
Now your one argument about Iron beating Diamond and thus Diamond requires skill, no, that will never happen it takes 3 to 4 iron sword hits for a skeleton to die while it only takes 2 diamond to kill ANYTHING, I don't know blobs ( I haven't found any in my new world's caves for some reason).
How can you seriously say that a diamond sword and armor does not give anyone demi god status in a 1 vs 1 fight? Sure if another player were to help the guy out or he has arrows MAYBE he could still stand a chance, but if all he has is a sword. NO WAY JOSE, that's not a balanced weapon in the sense you're making it out to be and it sounds exactly like an Arquebus. How does it sound like an Arqeubus? Well let's see, does it require skill, does it require one to actually dig and dig in a certain pattern until you hit the jackpot, does it give one an unprecedented COMBAT RELATED none the other or less edge, and finally does it reward the players for mining and exploration? Yes it does, just like the Arquebus rewards the players for mining and exploring, and actually taking risks to build and maintain the darn thing. In Minecraft there are tier levels to everything BTW. From building material, to trivial things such as farming setups or growing mega trees.
3 hits from an iron word compared to 2 with a diamond isn't that big a difference that it is overwhelming. Amour makes it even more reasonable. A person with an iron weapon is going to easily beat somebody with a stone sword too. I don't hear people complaining about that. Shields would also moderate this. And everyone has an equal chance to get, and successfully wield, a diamond sword. You are designing a weapon that many people will never be able to successfully use.
You are also yo-yoing between calling swords useless and overpowered.Which is it? Is it useless because of bows, or overpowered because it kills quickly?
The point about guns was not that it gives an edge to combat skills, it was that it gives and edge to combat skills to people who are already skilled. Your arguments show you obviously missed my point. You take a phrase I used, and throw it back at me out of context.

No. The point of adding in flintlock pistols would be to become a mother****ing pirate. Any other use is merely coincidental.

Of course people are not complaining about the current set up, and you seem to have misinterpreted my points when I was comparing a Diamond Sword to an Arquebus thus failing to see what I was hinting at. They are both highly risky weapons to use, one because of it's resource requirements and the fact it is a melee weapon, the other because it burns through it's bullets and durability, plus the firing rate impediment and taking into consideration then the Bow and Arrow, (which you yourself told me not to bring up because it's broken and some like you and me would want to see it fixed) can infact render them both useless if all the elements favor the wielder of the bow (Positionig, whether he's attacking or defending, health, armor, time of day, etc.).
@Gyro I lol'd, I actually want to be an Arquebus weilding, sword wielding, shield wielding conquistador/crusader if you don't mind.
edit: I'm barely noticing that I'm doing the nasty nasty of saying "if you would've read my points".
So you don't think a higher-powered version of the base weapon in the game, functioning identically to it apart from damage, is different from including a brand new weapon with completely different mechanics? You keep questioning why I accept diamond swords and not arabesques , and that is the reason. The current mechanics on sword fighting are a defining part of the gameplay. Increasing its damage does not alter the basic gameplay implications of it. A one-hit kill with it would, but that is not the case. The arabesques come with its own plethora of issues impacting gameplay, none of which I like, for reasons I have explained in detail. Yes, there may be parallels between them, but not in any way that effects my arguments.
In fact, I fully expect most combat to involve a diamond sword on each side.

Except sword play will never stop being the bread and butter, an Arquebus could never reach that potential. As the op and now me form now on will keep on saying, it's a deffensive, tactical, or fortification weapon, it is not meant to be standalone, it is meant to be a supplement to combat just like the B&A is. Except that unlike the B&A the Arquebus will obviously not be as flexible due to the firing rate, ammo, damage, and range it has, it will be for defensive or ambush purposes.
Not only that but Minecraft isn't just sword play it's also bow play, and it will stay predominantly bowplay until shields come around or it's nerfed. Plus it wont be diamond vs diamond all the time since Diamond highly varies on luck of the miner and not general skill, just like the acquisition on many other minerals except wood, water, and mob stuff.
If we use minecraft physics and make it a 40m/s projectile, rather than the hit trace the I was assuming for it, then we are in a different situation. Now we have a poor substitute for a crossbow.
No, because a firearm will do more damage than a crossbow, and a siege weapon will do more damage than a firearm. I see what you're trying to say, don't get me wrong; more than likely, I didn't communicate a particular point in my previous post well enough. To better explain what I meant, it's this dynamic all over again:
Wood/Gold < Stone < Iron < Diamond
Which when applied to ranged essentially becomes:
Bow < Crossbow < Firearm < Siege
It's unlikely that Notch would include such drawbacks as a lower fire rate (all actions in Minecraft function at the same rate; a bow is fired at the same rate as a sword, pickax, and etc. are swung). So, as far as ranged weapons go, what you get when you go to the next step up the weapons echelon is something that has slightly faster ammunition, does higher damage, and has ammo that is harder to craft than its predecessor.
(Side note: if Notch gives the ranged weapons echelon durability like all other weapons, then you'll have to expect bows to suffer from durability, too.)
Nonetheless, what you get is the same as swords: the next step up the echelon is a weapon that simply does more damage. The major difference here? The models and animations of each weapon in the ranged echelon is unique, rather than something so simplistic as a bunch of palette swaps.
I never said it would be bread and butter. I am saying that a skilled-only weapon is poor design.
And if diamonds are so luck-based, explain how I have gotten diamond swords in 10 separate games in less than a half-hour? They really are not hard to find when you know what you are doing.
@Mystify, then you are a lucky ******* at mining, because I never get anything on diamonds, I can 200+ iron from 7 spelunking expeditions, but at most I can only find 10 diamonds during those 7 spelunking expeditions, and those diamonds are always randomly located too, yes they're near lava pockets, but not ALL lava pockets.
@thecraww
You know what? Let's drop the whole, "you don't know what's good for you card" Because in one discussion I had with Mystify a while ago about nerfing Skeletons I never did that to him, even though I think he probably sucks at this game, you know why? Because I don't have an ego, I know I'm a shitty individual, but I try the best I can not to resort to trolling and the likes. (BTW Mystify in all seriousness have you finally mastered how to kill a Skeleton without a lava bucket?)
Listen, I'm not going to drop the "you don't know what's good for you" card. It isn't you, it's the game. Call me elitist, call me a *****, call me whatever you want. Mystify said something that makes perfect sense to me, and it seems to make no sense to you, so I'm forced to assume that you don't understand how it will adversely affect the game, or you're ignoring it.
This is nothing personal. If I believe something to be true, something that makes this weapon a horrible idea for Minecraft, and you don't debunk it, then I'm forced to assume one of two things.
1. You know that there's a problem with the weapon, and you've been purposefully dodging that problem.
2. You really, really don't get it.
What am I supposed to do? Agree with you? I think you're wrong, and you haven't said anything to make me think otherwise, so that's impossible. You're making no sense, failing to convince me, and someone else is making a lot of sense, who's already convinced me. Who am I going to agree with? I know that you feel the same way about me.
I've realized the futility of continuing this with you. I sincerely believe that you don't know what's good for this game. I'm sure you could say the same about me, but I'm glad that the only person who needs to know is the one that's making it.
I've also just now read the moderator message in the OP, which I'll admit that I really should have done earlier. It's right. There's no point in trying to argue about this. Notch probably won't add it, since he's said no before, but it's completely within your right to defend the idea to the teeth if you want to. We're both wasting our time, and I'm stopping now.
I don't think you're right. You don't think I'm right. I apologize for getting so passionate. Can we agree to disagree?
@thecraww
What problem have I been dodging, point me to that problem, because really, you're not pointing at it nor explaining your reasoning as to why I'm wrong and you're right. You know what you're doing? You're coming into the thread saying.
"Well excuse me but I do believe I'm better than you, and I know you believe you're better than me, so let's agree to disagree. Not only that but you have problems that you have not answered, and I will not make any effort to point them out unlike Mystify who has been doing so for half the thread with you telling him it's not such a big deal. I will also not respond to your response about the previous arguments I made in the thread"
That is all you did, you did not add anything constructive to the debate over gameplay mechanics, all you did was say, "no you are wrong! and you think I am, I'm too lazy to sort problems out, lets not argue!" in a seemingly apolegetic way. This is not what the board is about, if you cannot discuss the gameplay mechanics and have to resort to the whole "I know what's best for you and so does Notch" GTFO. The suggestions board was created as a sort of feedback from the community to see just how content they are and what would seem appealing to them, and as you said, the general consensus we have will not make it be automatically in the game, but don't say it will not affect Notch's decision over his game. Don't you remember the whole XP level up fiasco?
Aaaaaaand as I said you have not presented any argument against guns aside form the ones I refuted, so don't say you've contributed much.
And no one pays attention when I make sense. You are all monsters. Monsters, I say!
I did, I actually wanted to implement it to be one of the attributes of the Arquebus, but Mystify pointed out the fact that why have the Arquebus use it when the Crossbow is a much better and suited candidate for it. It was a brilliant argument though that we're talking about Minecraft physics. So many of my arguments have been taking consideration to them since then. (running speed of characters, Bow's haxxor properties, fact that the Diamond sword and Arquebus are both risky weapons because of resource generation, etc.)

Well, it's like I said: a firearm (be it an Arquebus or otherwise) would be a great third tier ranged weapon, while a crossbow would be a great second tier ranged weapon.
I've seen the way you argue and I've concluded that it is pointless to continue.
I don't care anymore, so I'm done arguing. You two are doing enough for me and all you need to know is that I've sided with him. This is all ******** because Notch very likely won't add guns. I didn't realize this before, but I do now. Can you blame me for cutting it short?
Looks like we can't agree to disagree then. I tried. If you ever get exhausted of talking this into the ground and quit, maybe you'll see what I was talking about. v0_ov
Say whatever you want about me. I agree with Mystify, but I'm not part of this anymore. You can have plenty of fun arguing with people who still matter.
Well, it's like I said: a firearm (be it an Arquebus or otherwise) would be a great third tier ranged weapon, while a crossbow would be a great second tier ranged weapon.
I totally agree with you there, there just doesn't seem to be much variation on ranged combat.
Also I think the Op's recipe and stats need a few updates (the recipe is broken due to new coding, there appears to be no mention of flint created arrows now)
So I will post an "updated" version here in a while

Stats The Arquebus would have 100% accuracy.
But bear with me before protesting this, and let's take a peek at our contestants side by side before passing judgment...
The OP has found that the average Minecraft character can sprint about 7 tiles in one second
The op also agreed to a carrying restriction to be implemented to the Arquebus to avoid it being fired multiple times.
I'm also going to point out this, this gun is not point and click, it is fused based, meaning after you click it takes 3 seconds to fire like the real thing
Edit: The only editing this post will get is that of Stats

There's no variation on melee combat, either. That's why I figure approaching ranged in the same way as melee would make the most sense, mechanically speaking.

Well yeah, melee is very boring too, that's why people are begining to make alot more shield topics than usual, I don't mind though, it's a great addition and would allow for much difficult Mob types to be implemented without a hitch

But I don't think people would be too happy to see the bow and arrow replaced though.
