You are correct, my sir.
Opinion is not always fact. Minecraft is what you make it. If guns are added you NEVER have to use them. Other people share this opinion and will very likely band together and form Gun free servers. This is a fantasy game, we are able to punch down trees and build anything we want to out of raw materials so why not have an option to allow those who want guns to have them. People have posted good ideas on how to add them, how to balance them to make them fair, and how they would be different from what we already have.
Here's a good suggestion. A server side option where server operators can restrict specific crafting templates. This way the people who hate guns can have servers and be happy and those who like the idea can to... There doesn't need to be hostility saying a specific wanted function will "ruin the game"

Cannons are a much different feature than guns. They are designed to take down part of a wall (in MC I guess) or castle and are not a player killer. Really, guns are never going to implemented because the community is so butthurt about it.
Here is how I envision guns working out:
[] [] []
[] [] []

Bullet.

= gun.
The bullets would actually deal FAR less damage than arrows, maybe one third, and have a much slower firing rate. However, they would impossible to dodge. Some people would find guns more useful, some would find bows more useful. They would have different uses. Guns would be handier against retreating enemies, bows would be more useful for preventing enemies from reaching or passing through a certain area.
Thoughts?

Currently the general idea would be that guns are more powerful but would be balanced by the reload speed of a muzzle loader. Arrows are already rather weak so making guns take 3 times more shots would make them completely useless. How many arrows does it take to kill a mob?

I can state that I am on the neutral side (leaning to no if you want to be exact) of the whole gun business, but this one gun idea is really a good idea. You want reasons?
Crossbows:
This has been one of the repeating 3 "No guns" reasons that are present in this thread. Let me explain exactly what the crossbow would probably be:
An advanced version of the Bow. Simple enough. It will have better stats, but more difficulty to craft.
What would the Arquebus be:
An advanced version of the crossbow, and the top tier.
"If we have the crossbow, why do we need a more advanced version of it then?"
Because its better in most ways. Yeah we can live without it, but we miss quite a bit. I should also state this: What is the Diamond Pickax? An advanced version of the iron one. Whats the Iron Pickax? An advanced version of the wooden one. Same thing with 90% of the tools. The game is about progression. The longer you play, the better things you get.
First Person Shooters:
The second reason why I've seen guns denied in this thread.
"a video game centered on shooting where the player's on-screen view of the game world simulates that of the character" ~Wikipedia
While currently Minecraft is not a First Person Shooter, as soon as player vs player combat arrives for SMP, when the first player hits another, it will officially be a FPS. If you want to get technical, it will also be a Third Person Shooter as soon as someone does the same in 3rd person.
"It says shooting, that means guns."
Wikipedia strikes yet again:
"Shooting is the act or process of firing rifles, shotguns or other projectile weapons such as bows or crossbows." ~Wikipedia
Sorry, I forgot this bit:
It says in the Wikipedia definition "...centered on shooting..." I believe we have all seen the incredible projects people are working on. As far as I've seen, Capture the Flag games already make Minecraft an FPS because they are the only things anything close to being centered on shooting anything.
Theme:
The third reason I've seen this denied.
OK, lets admit it. This comes out EVERYWHERE. I wish to clear this up: Minecraft has no clear theme to it. There are things from way back, and tings that are more recent. There are also things that don't exist (redstone). This really isn't an argument but an excuse.
Its useless
It's far from useless. There are many gun suggestions out there, half of them so underpowered that they are pointless to add (which is why those "I hate guns" people "like" them). As I see this gun, I see strategy more then anything. You need strategy for this in order to survive with them.
Strategy:
"Point-and-click warfare" ~someone earlier in this thread
As stated, I see this as one of the more prominent features of this gun. To survive with the massive "I'M HERE" counters is a big part of using the gun. The amount of strategy required will prevent most new players from using them, but allow better players to become very effective with them.
To let you guys know something, Minecraft is point-and-click combat. You point at something and hold-click to damage it. It really depends on what you are holding.
Guns vs Arquebus:
The arquebus isn't just another gun idea. It has more depth to it, like excellent balance and strategy. It is also very useful to those who can wield it properly. This gun has numerous counters to it. Pulling out a gun at anytime is a terrible idea. You have to think about when you fire it because it will cost you.
Snipers:
I don't like the idea of people camping somewhere and killing people who are so far away that they can't react. You can still become a sniper with this, but you need to prepare a lot. Everything is against you when you click the mouse, so when you do, it must be done with more thought. Think about how hunters act now. Some stalk their prey from where they can't be seen and wait until the PREY moves into the optimal position. Others wait in tree-forts for their prey to come to them. Once a shot is fired, they know their cover is blown, so they know their shot must count. I can guarantee most players don't have the patience for this in a video game, but those who do can become very effective with some practice and other weapons.
Arquebus Limit:
Carrying around 10 loaded arquebus guns will soon become the rave of the game. This is why we place a small limit. 2 guns should be reasonable, as even if both are fired one after another, you still can't achieve a kill on a well-health player.
Instantaneous bullet:
I would say no to this. As some people have argued, a bullet as fast as light is too fast, and I completely agree. I would say that it takes 2 seconds to reach 64 blocks. What can you do in 1-2 seconds? Hear the HSSS the gun makes and move to another block. However, it fast enough that unless you act fast enough, you will be hurt quite a bit.
Accuracy:
Although accuracy is one of the big things for the gun, I say no. Why? Its just too perfect. I would say this: By the time the bullet reaches the 74 block limit, it has moved anywhere from 0-3 blocks away. This is all done randomly, as it is in real life. However, the gun should be on mark up to 6 blocks away. That way it can act as a close combat weapon, but it has no benefits then if it hit a target 63 blocks away, other then the fact that it will always hit the target 6 blocks away.
Armor Piercing:
Many people will continue to argue that the arquebus is purely a crossbow but a bit better. I would say that the gun bypasses armor, dealing damage only to your health, making it more different then a crossbow. Why? Because a gun wont do much to armor, but it will hurt the person inside. But in order to do this effectively, we would need to place a flat damage rate. The damage would have to be balanced greatly, however. This would make healing much more important. Say someone has 3 hearts left, but just got diamond armor (no wear&tear), and decided to pass on healing with some grilled pork. If he got hit by a gun, he wouldn't be hurt a bit in health and armor, he would die. Then he would hate himself for not healing up.
Before people continue to bring up with quotes of Notch saying "No guns", I wish to see that Notch sees this thread through, and gives his reasons for his decision upon this suggestion. I think that Minecraft could be better without guns, but the right gun could help the game be better. Getting that gun right is the big issue (so big that nobody has got it yet).
Lastly: This thread was pretty good until after the 3rd page. Whoever decided it was worth while to merge threads: it was probably for the worse.
Alright, I suppose slower reloading but higher damage without the insta-hit would be fine too.

I like the idea of a flintlock pistol and I'm not sure why everyone is so hostile towards it. No one supports a game-breaking all-purpose weapon. I just think old fashioned guns would be a nice aesthetic alternative.
Quote from SkyPiercers!? »
Again, why would he add something worse than a bow that costs more to make and has slower load speeds?
Why would he add both meat and bread when they serve the same purpose?
Because bread heals more but is harder to find, meat is easy to get but it doesn't heal as much.
except you can cook meat which takes so much less time than farming/making bread and get roughly the same effect
Not to mention, notch doesn't want insta-hit from afar weapons, that's why he didn't want guns.

Yeah, but you must understand how out of place this would be, redstone, diamond primitive tools, someone shows up to your base with a MAC-10 and blows the **** out of you. I'm just saying I like minecraft how it is.
"Notch doesn't want insta-hit from afar weapons, that's why he didn't want guns."
Overpowered ranged weapons will make the sword useless. If you look at history, with the advent of guns, the use of swords sharply declined. In a game where close combat is the norm, guns would feel too out of place.
If anything, I would prefer an expensive, slow-firing crossbow. I mean, extremely slow.

There is no greater crime against humanity than the intentional preservation of the weak and incompetent.
I was first against guns because until i saw this the gun ideas where "OMG U CAN HAZ A LEET SNIP3R!!!!!11!" This has some thought to it and fits with the world (at least i thinks so). I think the gun should be able to one shot a zombie, two shot a creeper, and two shot a skeleton. These would need to be one shot o two shot kills because Depending on the range by the time you reload you could already be dead (assuming reload time is somewhere between 5-6 seconds). Guns should do more damage the bows or else why should they exist? Also the large resource consumption would make this gun very rarely usable more then once or twice, so you should be able to kill at least one enemy with one or two bullets. A one shot on other players should never be allowed. I think four or five shots to bring down a player would be plausible. So hats off to you good sir for making the first plausible gun that I can support!
