I agree mostly with the overpowered reason. Just stand on top of a hill and pick off other players and mobs without ever being touched. At least with the bow, it takes practice and skill to shoot things accurately from afar and it also takes a few seconds instead of being instant
This post again? the first was terrible because it put personal blame on people who support guns, it also didn't have any suggestion to add to minecraft, there is a dedicated thread to all things guns. I personally support guns and although this post has nice wrapping paper, it is a rant post just like before...
Because firearms are not within the theme of Minecraft, where it is only simple mechanical devices. Most firearms, including musket's have very small intricate working mechanical parts, far more indepth then anything else in Minecraft.
Also a square bullet would not be very effective and would lose velocity very very quickly fired from a crude square barrel and would only travel a very short distance being non aerodynamic.
Jeb has said that many things that are already Mod's will not be added to vanilla minecraft. There is already several very well done Gun Mod's out there so why would Jeb use his time making one? If you want to use guns, use one of the mods, but I don't see it ever fitting in with vanilla minecraft which is themed towards swords and bows.
I agree with amadeus. it would look wierd, and if i was gonna slaughter an animal in minecraft, i sure as hell am not gonna waste a few good slugs to make a freakin painting! (or peice of bacon...)
I agree that it should have guns, but the minimum level. Say for instance, that you build a blowgun (ancient type of gun). You run the risk of breathing IN when you shoot, and swallowing your (poisonous?) ammo. A pistol, if not properly taken care of, can backfire and blow your hand off. Now, what say ye' to that? Lets also say that you can create a musket. If you make that, then you run the risk of having your stores of gunpowder 'blow up', or become diluted, if they are not kept dry enough. Also, if we get guns (albeit primitive/ancient), then I want a crossbow, dammit.
For those who say the majority of the community doesn't want guns, show me proof.
For those who say minecraft have simple mechanical devices. A musket is no more complex then a dispensor (but way more dangerous). And when you can explain me why a square bullet cannot fly fast IN A WORLD that stone can float in air, hold lava in a bucket, break down a tree with your fist and plant like creature can create an explosion strong enough to break down walls, only then will I accept that square bullets can not fly fast.
I really wouldn't care if guns get added or not, but I believe in being fair, which some are not being fair.
Some are not being fair, as in they are not agreeing completely with you? Think you need to come to terms with the idea that this is a topic of two sides, and neither side will give ground to the other. Some like guns, some don't and when it comes down to it. Jeb has said he has no interest in adding stuff from current mod's into the game. I don't see the point in arguing something that will not happen, they are focusing more on fixing biomes and generation which is what they should be doing so people stop losing their work with new updates that require new maps, but you would rather them stop all that work for the betterment of Minecraft everywhere so they can focus on a trivial argument between MCians about guns..
This doesn't seem like a good use of anyone's time.

Ok, so nothing in mine craft can be realistic!
Now, wool MUST come from pigs, bacon from the grass, AND of course, burn in water, and be able to swim in stone. And, just to make it more "MINECRAFT" for JUST YOU, lets make squids talk! and they can befriend you, fly, and then you can turn gigantic and destroy all of the MC world just because your too dumb to think!
But of course, none of this would happen, as MC is based of off real-world things, for the most part, and we aren't crazy raving lunatic idiots.
Now, I'm NOT saying that guns should be added, and mainly want to say this: the dispenser uses a bow to fire. The musket needs an igniter, gunpowder, an aerodynamic or spherical bullet, a barrel made in a factory for the bullet to fly through to speed up, the stock (extremely hard to make by hand), the trigger, and a way to reload and clean the gun without throwing it away and getting a new one when its out of ammo.
Besides, learn something potentially useful in life and learn how to aim a damn bow and not just take the easy way out whilst barely trying, if you even tried at all.

Now, this is were you look foolish. What I said included something realistic touched with the square style of minecraft. What you said is just a bunch of random things to "try" and prove me wrong. Plus, just for me? I'm not the one who made the thread, check my post history, I never asked for such things, there are OTHER people wanting and asking for this, so it wouldn't be just for me.
Uses a bow to fire? So a bow is capable of firing dirt? stone? flesh? eggs? I'm sure bows without any special equipment are unable to fire those things. So you could say dispensers could be realistic based with a touch of fantasy.
Ignitire? Flint&Steel
Gunpowder? Doesn't the plant bomb creature drop them?
Barrel made in a factory? Yes, so does picks heads, shovel heads, sword blades, nearly all of the iron based items. Or at least go to a blacksmith, which are also capable of making steel cylinder.
Stock hard to make by hand? Maybe, but it can still be done. If it matters, the first muskets didn't even have stock.
Cleaning it? Our tools already degrade over time, the mustket would be no exception, so there would be no need. Having low durability because of the lack of cleaning would be a good thing actually, bow having higher durability and easy to make versus low durability and hard to make.
Bullet? and this is were I put my "fantasy" point.
Finally, to end it all. How is learning to shoot a bow any more useful in life then learning to shoot a gun?
It's just too overpowered! No matter how much you compromise. Also many players just don't like the idea, do some have a reason not to? No, but they just don't like it. Me being one of them, perhaps guns could be a good addition, but my gut is screaming OMFG NO GUNS WILL CORRUPT MINECRAFT, even if I don't know why or how.
My stance is that a new weapon, melee or ranged, would be very difficult to balance properly against the sword/bow without either being a little worse than the sword/bow or a little bit better than the sword/bow.
That being said, I can't help but die a little inside every time I see one of those "knee-jerk" reactions to gun threads (like SecondAttempt mentioned above this post). I personally don't actually want a gun or other new weapon, but I defend the principle of them because most of the arguments against them are very illogical and often downright stupid.
If people really want to insist that a low-tech firearm would be too hard for Steve to make, then it could be a dungeon-chest only item. Solves that issue and adds rarity/value to them.
If I helped in any way, don't click that little green +, instead tell me how much you liked the post. (Only those who are incapable of earning rep the hard way have to beg for it in their signatures).
I find it really annoying how everyone seems to say guns ruin minecraft, so is a list of reasons people say that, and why they are idiots.
MINECRAFT IS A FANTASY GAME.
Err, so? Plenty of fantasies use primitive guns. Take Warhammer or Fable, plenty of guns, but they're still fantasy games. If anything guns make those sort of games seem more fantastical. Besides, if Steve can make advanced killing machines and super computers, then a simple arquebus or flintlock shouldn't be to hard. To prove my point, I'll make a list of fantasies that include guns AND show how loose the whole idea of fantasy is. Fable, Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000, Final Fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons, World of Warcraft, Star Wars, ect.
MINECRAFT IS SET IN MEDIEVAL TIMES/ MIDDLE AGES.
What's your point? There were guns in what you would call medieval times.
Besides, Minecraft isn't set in medieval times anyway, it has electricity, TNT, jukeboxes, diamond tools, mine-carts, all things invented after medieval times.
MINECRAFT IS SUPPOSED TO BE INNOCENT.
I've seen plenty of kids games that use modern weapons and just change the name or impact slightly to keep it innocent. Now read this scenario. During the day Steve gets hungry, so he horrifically slaughters an innocent animal and feeds on its carcass. He also kills sheep for his own private comfort. At night demons and creatures of the night come out of the ground to do the same to Steve. The next day Steve heads into a cave, kills all the wildlife living inside and takes apart the tunnels just to find precious gems. Later he travels to another dimension and kills people there (who never did anything except look at him) just to steal some gold. Then he goes to yet another dimension and kills an animal that's the last of it's kind just for bragging rights. How much of this sounds innocent to you?
MINECRAFT IS A BUILDING GAME.
so? terraria, 3079, ace of spades.......... all building games with firearms.
NOTCH SAID NO GUNS EVER.
He said no modern guns e.g ak-47s ever, direct me to his post and i'll prove it. Besides, Notch's word no longer counts for anything, he left development Jeb's in power now.
JEB SAID NO GUNS.
proof please!
GUNS WOULD BE OVERPOWERED.
I think it's been made it pretty clear that they wouldn't. Even if they were added Jeb would find ways to avoid having trigger-happy maniacs on SMP.
MINECRAFT IS NOT AN FPS.
minecraft is a first person game with an item that shoots things [bow]. does that make it a FPS?
IT WOULD GIVE AN OPENING FOR NUKES/JETS/AK-47S.
We already have TNT, yet very few people ask for those things to be added.
MINECRAFT JUST SHOULDN'T HAVE GUNS.
Okay, seriously!? if you say this then you're either a t***l, were raised by a t***l or a just really stupid.
IF YOU WANT GUNS GO PLAY CALL OF DUTY.
i've checked and i'm 99.947762887% sure that there has never been a musket in any call of duty game. not to mention I hate the game.
still think minecraft shouldn't have guns? if yes, then I have NOTHING to say.
Sorry, I should rephrase, they could upset the balance of the game.
Ok, so we know guns have to have different shooting mechanics than bows, otherwise why add them. We can't have them spam bullets instantly either. So most people would go for good accuracy and high damage(this is also how the earliest of guns were like). The possible problem with this being, is that it would add sniping mechanics, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. However it could mess up the balance of fighting, for example, sword and bow combat would be useless if you could just snipe of your enemy from the distance, this style of battle could be added but it could mess things up.
I agree. Guns would add no feel to the game that we don't already have, a gun is just a bow with longer range, more speed and more cost per shot. Some people don't realise the similarities with primitive guns and bows. They both have annoying reloads.
The only argument you didn't cover is one I don't agree with, it's that it's a clone of the bow, I say "and a shovel is a clone of the pickaxe."

I've seen a lot of people propose a close-range, high-damage, slow-reloading, highly-inaccurate version of firearms. And as I said before, the bow covers a very huge spectrum of combat styles, meaning that making a gun that is not under/overpowered would be very difficult.
One possible solution I came up with is that the gun would have the same durability of the bow, same damage, same range, same charge-up, etc. Basically it would just be a cooler-looking version of the bow. It wouldn't be any better than the bow, so that eliminates overpoweredness. That being said, I would much rather have a new weapon that has a unique purpose instead of a cosmetic reskin.

Okay, so here's the deal. I've merged a couple of pretty good gun threads together not only so some of you get a better idea of how good suggestions are made, but also so you can see that guns were at one point discussed critically and calmly.
I'd like to see some more of that. I'm sure we all would.
In the future, I would prefer that all guns or firearm-related suggestions appear in this thread, and this thread alone where it can be freely discussed, supported, or rejected.
Just remember that objections are well noted, even by Notch. There's no need to beat this into people's heads any more than it has with another pile of "NO" posts. The fact of the matter is that guns are desired by some and they are perfectly well allowed to have a thread for that.
No excuses for threadshitting in this thread (or others for that matter >.>). Consider this advance warning. I'll be editing the OP to add this lecture there as well.
Behave yourselves. If you feel that you can't, then just move on to something else.
Carry on, gentlemen. NOTE: Any additional gun threads are to be referred to this thread and reported for my attention. Two dozen threads for the same sort of device isn't necessary.
Oh yeah... It could be close ranged with low accuracy as well. Perhaps a gun could be a weapon that rewards people with really good aim, unlike the bow where you can miss and just shoot again with little recharge time.
Why am I proposing design ideas for an idea I didn't support in the first place? ._.
No guns! NO GUNS! NO DAMN GUNS!
