"Come one, come all...to the man whom is tall. He got a deal, and it's quite the steal...so long as you don't value your soul. With an manic grin, born of sin, he's got a little something up his sleeve...but don't you leave, I promise you Steve...it's well worth it."
My sincerest apologies for the little poetic rant there, I tend to get a bit carried away from time to time. The following is concept based upon a possible randomized encounter that one might find themselves happening upon throughout their travels. Marvin, as it likes to be called for the sheer purpose of reference alone, is the mysterious traveling merchant...one of whom appears to have escaped some obscure asylum judging by the manic grin spread wide across that visage. Every day, Marven teleports to random biome upon the map and awaits would be travelers of whom might...barter...for the various items in which it sells. However, ever the impatient little trickster, a single deal is all this enigmatic recluse has time for...vanishing upon purchase to yet another biome.
Name: The mysterious Merchant, or Marvin if you prefer. Health Points: 60 ( x30) Attack Strength: 5-10 Drops: ??? XP Gain: ???
Note:Killing Marvin does not actually kill Marvin...this might sound strange, but it's all illusion. ~Waggles fingers~ Note: Marvin appears within the yellow circle next to his post.
Merchant Outpost:
The Basics:
Alright, now...lets get down to the serious concept behind all the fancy absurdity. What I'm proposing is a wandering merchant of whom holds an almost sinister demeanor. The items in which this character would carry for barter are extremely rare, some of which might possibly be completely unobtainable otherwise. To compensate for this, players can only purchase one item type (some items let you select an amount you want to buy.) from Marvin before he vanishes completely. When he vanishes, his entire little outpost goes up in flames...
Everything that Marvin sells has an Emerald cost, but this price is but a small gratuity... There's another cost for bartering with this entity, one of which follows suit with its shady appearance. When you purchase from Marvin, you'll obtain a curse...the severity of such depending upon the particular item and the amount of which you buy of that item.
Deal with a Devil:
Deal with a Devil is the curse in which all whom purchase from the mysterious merchant obtain. This curse removes hearts from your total count for a duration of time, that duration and the amount of hearts removed depending upon the rarity, and amount, of the item in which you have purchased. The strongest heart value of this curse is five, and never does it exceed beyond such. However, the duration of this curse can last for a significant period of time.
Note: The duration and severity of the curse is not listed in the purchase, you'll find out only upon buying. Note: The wiki will most likely have these values listed when players have had enough chances to interact with Marvin and fully ascertain such...
In conclusion:
The mysterious merchant could provide a great deal of allure in traversing the landscape, in much the same manner as Jungle and Desert temples do now. With the potential of very lucrative items in which you can't find anywhere else, players will be seeking out this mysterious character for a chance to purchase before other players upon their server...due to the fact that he only makes one deal before vanishing to another biome. The curse that accompanies purchasing from this individual also flavors the pot with a repercussion for your claim, a temporary one that doesn't make it over the top...yet still follows suit with the feel of the character.
Possible Merchandise:
Sentry Block:
The sentry is a conceptual block that has a single side that looks much like an eye, not human of course. You can place this block down anywhere in which you could place any other block, and upon right clicking of the such...you can set a key. Now, when you're out traveling...you can hit the key in which you bound to your Sentry Block to pull up a mini window displaying the view in which the eye side faces.
Possible Uses:
- Surveillance of your base.
- Spying upon another player.
- Scouting towers.
You could even incorporate redstone and pistons to potentially move the field of view.
Zombie Dust:
An ancient recipe long since held sacred by the Headhunters, located deep amongst the Minecraftia jungles, (working on Headhunters) this strange powdery substance can convert any villager into your own personal zombie slave.
Note: Held like a weapon, and used like one...causes you to blow out a white particle effect that converts villagers into zombies "pets" that will act you just like dogs.
Note: I actually had this idea several days before the first snapshot came out and revealed that villagers can be converted into zombies by other zombies. I was absolutely smitten by this, as it permits me to be lazy and say that the effect just turns them into one of those guys! Aaaaaaaaand the same process turns them back!!
Are you a little peeved off at that villager who tried to shaft you on a deal? Well, now you can make him a true working stiff! Order your Zombie Dust today!
DISCLAIMER
The thread is about the generalized concept of a wandering merchant, the item possibilities are just possibilities randomly thought up for the concept in general. I am more than sure that better ones could be devised by professionals, which I am not. Please understand that this is about the generalized concept...and not the specifics. Thank you.
I liked the idea, it's sinister! Good texture, and good poetry in the start, i didn't like the pet zombies however, that's just, but the Sentry is good! I would like to find him out, just make sure Milk does not erases the curse, as it does with all the effects, i think his spawning spot is much of a freebie of Nether items, as he's always travelling he shouldn't have an outpost i guess, but his idea is good
Also, a suggestion, what if when you buy something, he teleports as usual, but before you hear him laughing (Correct my spelling if i'm wrong)? Would make him very spooky!
Support, but please don't bump topics, it's not allowed
though one change he outpost is made of un breakable blocks.
when he teleports that outpost disappears. and blood red lava behind.
also if you "kill" him you get a random item. but the next time you see him, his skin changes to make him look mad.
if you "kill him again here" he drops a lot more stuff, but if you trade he's happy again (or goes to default) IF you kill him here, he wont trade with you.
this give the player the choice of killing him twice and getting a stuff, or slowly getting even more stuff.
anyway who cares? (I do) /support!
Cheers!

Sounds good to me, and yeah...Milk wouldn't cure this curse at all.
Laugh idea is very good, I approve.
The spawning spot vanishes with him, but you're right...it shouldn't provide such easily accessible nether items.

Love the idea of lava left behind...so long as it's nothing major that will kill the player that deals with him. Aside from that, in regards to killing him for items, could be implemented if they choose that route. I don't see why not, but if that's the case...I feel he should be an extremely difficult boss type mob, and if you loose...he simply raises his prices.
Creep level: Off the charts.
Want Level: Meh... 50-50... I'm still confused by the Deal with a Devil.
Haha.
The Deal with the Devil is simply a temporary curse, a price for making an exchange with this devilish character. It wears off after a designated duration dependent upon the price of the item you purchase.
This seems like something Mojang would never add to Minecraft. Trading with Villagers is good enough. A new villager that has rarer stuff however would be a nice addition. But this "Marvin the Merchant" thing just seems absurd to me.

I'm running off the concept of just bringing a bit more life into the game. The name itself is, more or less, little more than humor...a play on words geared to spur a giggle. It doesn't really have to be included, nor would I ever assume it so. As for a merchant in town selling more rare goods, that's all fine and well...but a stationary, static, merchant isn't going to have the type of items I'm actually looking for within this concept. It's, essentially, a means to bring in rarities that you may not get a chance to obtain due to the randomness of these encounters...which warrant more lucrative items.

Ah I get it. But this would awesome to see, maybe as a mod more than in game, but just the thought of having a dark carnie in your game, sends shivers down your spine!
So...a being who teleports, has a lot of health but can't be killed, and takes away 5-10 hearts...so this is Herobrine that sells you stuff?
In all seriousness, 60 health is a a lot, that's over half of the Ender Dragon's health!
It just might be, its a mysterious man...one can never tell who this entity truly is.
In all seriousness, its just meant to be a very shady merchant type character that you're suppose to deal with...or avoid completely. That would be the reasoning behind the high health and such...but whatever was balanced and decided upon, were it included, wouldn't be up to me. Whatever works, works...all I can do is provide a very generalized idea.

A dark carnie is -very- much the type of personality this character is suppose to have.
