Ok here is my idea,
Make it to where you can go to a normal NPC village, and pretty much take over as king, with the villager dislike and like that might be coming in 1.4 i think that if u can actually have subjects that will work under you would be cool.
Some villagers can do when they are under the rule of some one:
Chop wood
Harvest and replant crops
Defend Player
Defend Village
Mine
Smelt any ores (can only be done by the blacksmith)
Make swords or armor with the ores (talk to the blacksmith to assign what he makes)
Butchers can now breed and kill pigs as well as cook the meat
you can have librarians can now give low lvl enchants
with all the roles villagers can access a chest that is meant for them, so pretty much warriors can equip armor and a weapon if you place it in there chest and the harvesters can use the tools you put in there, you also could make it to where u can build them houses and assign it to them
So theres my idea post what you think and if i can improve it

Dont kill the creepers... befriend them they are a useful way of getting in to places

Have them mine for you, get wood! Defend you! They are helpless, that's why they have iron glomes!
Maybe if you paid them emeralds... Then it's not to over powered.
What you expect: Villager mobs fighting and mining at your command, aiding you in your epic conquest of the world.
What you would probably get: Villager mobs cramming into each other as they try and fail to perform the actions you commanded, ultimately doing nothing but get in your way and/or get themselves killed.
Pardon my pessimism, but I don't have much faith in "friendly" AI, especially not in a game like Minecraft.
jk, jk. Anyways, it is overpowered. I don't like the way you earn their service, I think the trading system is fine. No quests, no kings, just trading, it's all that is needed.

Overpowered and aesthetically displeasing. I like living on the outskirts of a town; helping out the villagers by upgrading their village and getting rewards through trade and Iron Golem security. I don't want to lord over them.
I had a thought for an SSP mod along this line. When you pass a certain milestone, you receive a follower (like a Steve? but with a different skin). That villager can be ordered around by giving them various items. I have this whole chart written out where you can choose any of dozens of commands by giving a specific helmet and tool. But I won't bore you with that.
For SMP, I wouldn't be opposed to having NPCs (but not villagers. They are peaceful folk) that you could sorta tame/enlist to fight for you. Like dogs, but with weapons.

Maybe there could be a game mode for this? It would be way to overpowered otherwise. And Mojang would have a tough job setting the idea. Oh and to make your suggestion look more professional you should use capitols.
