So, i heard that the beacon block is going to be added to minecraft 1.4. I think that there is a slight problem.
I heard that any player within the given radius will be affected by the buffs. This would be great for defending your base against mobs, but not so good for defending against other players.
My idea, is that if the tower is built on diamond blocks, only players with diamond armour can be affected by the buffs. The same goes for gold and iron, but with an emerald pyramid, any player can have the buffs.
Alternativley, a new armour could be introduced, and you can only feel buffs if you wear this armour. Could be called “diamond/ gold/ iron infused chestplate” and could look like this.I only had time to do the diamond one, and it was just a 5 minute sketch, so if anyone wants to improve on my design, or add a crafting recipie, then be my guest. I am fully open to suggestions and criticism, so please leave any thoughts regarding this in the comments.
I think the better choice would be to make it to where you don't get the effects until you're inside of the area for a few minutes. That way the attackers would have to be in the base for a while
I honestly think the Beacon Block is in its alpha stage. I think it is the worst looking thing I will see in Minecraft. (Not to be offensive) Plus, it's going to be very OP on PVP servers. I think the Beacon Block idea should be completely abandoned.
It's really meant for map makers and singleplayer survivalists more than it is for PVP. What that means is, it can be used in PVP (as in creating an area in the arena that creates the desired buffs), but it's not meant for every random legitimate player who stumbles across the materials required (whatever they may be) to make it. However if you insist on having one in your home, I suggest making it in the dead center of your home and underground, as you would expect any kind of shrine to do. Building a glass chimney around the light beam can be aesthetically pleasing in a number of scenarios.
That aside, it's far from finished; it may even use a different model.

It wouldn't be OP in PvP because building one would be a huge investment of resources, even if building yours out of iron blocks it would still need 1476 iron for the most powerful pyramid. You also run the risk of enemy factions stealing the blocks and making the beacon useless. And you can't exactly hide it, since there is a giant column of light pointing at it that can be seen from chunks away. Not to mention the buffs aren't exactly the most powerful thing ever. They are nice little buffs not something that turns you into a raging omnipotent being.
I don't think the way the beacon works should change for PvP. You could make your walls right at the edge of the effect so as long as you keep them outside your base they won't benefit from it. And you could always shut it off by using a piston to block its view of the sky if needed. It's a tactical decision.
only good i see for them is giving us light to spot locations over large distances, don't really care for buff, but they might be nice... we shall see.
I have an idea of making this massive pyramid then putting a golden "crown" on top to fitt a beacon, it would look epic and give one hell of a land mark XD

I hope that mojang sees this
This one is a lot better, I like this.
yea, then that way people would have to wait for a bit until it takes effect
