This has been suggested before, the most recent iteration a suggestion about whales by thecraww. Some variations on this are already used in some of the fancier servers to access other maps. I'm just throwing out a clarification about the idea.
Sub-maps would be small maps connected to larger or infinite maps. They wouldn't exist independently, but rather as a part of the main map. They wouldn't be accessible by normal means (walking). Let me throw out a few examples:
-Large Entities: If some entity was particularly large, entering it might cause you to enter a sub-map. Say you have large ship. There might be an option to enter the hold, which would be a sub-map.
-Alternate Mini-Worlds: Admit it. You've always wanted to have your own universe in which to muck around, like some minor deity. Now you can! Using the most powerful magic available to minecraftian, Qwillian Ind. has developed an object that allows you to have exactly that! You want it? Ten diamonds please.
In all seriousness, I know some people don't want an overly complex side to minecraft. They prefer the simple blue-collar working life already put in place. They don't want no newfangled al-ter-nayt re-al-ih-tees. I humbly disagree.
-Extended Locales: Much like an alternate mini-world, just more based on reality. This is a sort of "the inside of my house is bigger than its exterior" sort of thing. Again, very expensive resource wise.
-Thematic Mini-Worlds: This use has pretty much already been suggested. The idea is you could travel to a separate hell or heaven map, or the moon, or whatever people have been thinking up. I don't necessarily like those ideas in particular, but the very idea opens up some cool possibilities.
I know the ideas are clunky. Eviscerate them however you wish. Feedback?

I think systems which allow you to create these things are a good idea, but there needs to be some sort of strong mechanism and explanation behind it.
Not sure. I'm too tired right now to think of one. Anyone is welcome to try and come up with a good system for it. I feel like diamonds are getting overused. We need a new precious material to make our nifty new objects.

I don't know... Everyone was talking about those teleporter things. What about making it so we can use them to generate small instanced maps, like accessing another plane, rather than teleporting somewhere on THIS map?

This may be a fad, but I love dragons, so why the heck not?

Intriguing and awesome idea. It's definitely a better explanation, but I'm not sure how the actual mechanic would work. I see problems with the idea, but it's DEFINITELY worth looking into.

1. How would you define the dimensions of the realm you tapped into?
2. Once there, how would you get back, without working for days on end building another teleporter and linking the two?
3. What if mobs can use it, and you tap into hell?
4. What if a bunch of people find your teleporter pad while you're in the other realm, and surround it with traps, just to be dicks?
Potential Solutions:
1. Standardize them. Or just use a limited map generator with preset options, like for current indev, and just link that to the teleporter.
2. This would give them a reason to craft a second teleporter pad before jumping in. It's like a fool playing with magic he doesn't fully comprehend; he's bound to burn himself somehow.
3. Make it so mobs can't use it.
4. Claim flags.

mobs should be able to use it. setting up the materials for a portal should yield two portals.
anyhow, i'd like to see sub-maps implemented for THE MOON and it would also allow skilled modders(you know, when we can mod the game, after it goes into beta or whatever and we can mod and yeah) to use the rooms as instance dungeons in a sort of RPG like mission setting.

Would you dare to meet the gaze of the basilisk, or face the flames as the phoenix burns?
Make a "door" out of gold. Get magical dimensional realm portal.
Something like that. Teleporters that can go to these realms would be cool. You can have in between realms, teleporter realms, arena realms, all sorts of realms. Although I think they should be expensive to maintain.
Maybe they aren't "real" realms. Maybe they're just sort of dream/simulation realms, where you can't carry anything in with you.
I imagine they would have to be kept small, maybe a bit smaller than the current small maps.
I absolutely love this idea, I only hope it isn't exploited as a go-and-be-antisocial thing.

Exactly. I don't think it would be an anti-social thing. They wouldn't really be a place to live. Maybe a short excursion sort of thing.
Also, what Kydo says. They really have a lot of uses.

I was thinking of using them as a place for limited maps with outlandish themes.

Yeah, it would be perfect to place all the hell and freakyish themes in.
It's given me a bit of inspiration.
Since Notch is looking for a new way for creatures to appear, like reproduction, and it would be silly for skeletons or zombies to reproduce, and I've always liked the idea of portal summoning, you could create a portal that would spawn evil creatures like zombies, etc., but it would also allow you to enter it, teleporting you to a hellish type area.
