We have blocks like gravel and sand, that unlike other blocks are effected by gravity, and fall to the ground. But what if we had blocks that fell only when you stood on them? I call these pitfall blocks.
Standing on top of the block causes it to fall down like sand or gravel does.
The block falls when mobs stand on top of it.
The blocks is not effected if you punch it, so players can more easily collect the block.
There is a very short delay before the block falls, giving players chance to move before falling to their inevitable demise. (Or maybe they fall on a pile of wool, I don't really know.)
The block does not fall if there is a block below it. (As would be expected by anyone with common sense.)
The block is not used in crafting recipes, smelting recipes, or brewing recipes. It's just a block, don't be stupid.
The block has low durability, like sand or dirt.
As expected, the block probably looks something sand, gravel, or dirt. Maybe it's mud, I don't know.
Every time you step on the block, somewhere a troll dies horribly.

Another variation could be a block that "fades" when you step on it, or by redstone. It will become translucent and you can fall through it. And for the pitfall, I think stone might be a better choice, as it's much more common, maybe there could be a way to change how it looks?
EDIT: @Woodruff That's actually a great idea for a recipe, maybe it could be the top block is how it looks, bottom is gravel/sand (gravel preferred, as it's harder to get imo)
Remember that this is just a new type of block, not one specific one. That means there could be either cracked stone, or mud, or whatever decent kinds of blocks you come up with.

There is no crafting recipe. I think it's a far better idea to find this block as a naturally spawned material.
There really should be a recipe, or people would start raging, clottering this whole forum up.
It would be much easier than hunting everywhere, and more convienient for trap makers.

I hate people who complain. I hate spiders. I hate people who own an Xbox One. I hate people who like sandbox games. I hate people who like first person shooters. I hate people who like explosions. I hate people who like video games. I hate people who are hateful. I hate people that don't like spam. I hate people who like cake. I hate people who type in proper grammar and spell words properly on the internet. I hate hypocrites.

Like I said, the block is probably similar to mud or something. How exactly would you craft that?
Besides, it's not like I said the block is rare. You could probably find it just by digging a few blocks underground.
And if people rage over just a crafting recipe, than they're silly, and should reconsider just how much worth having a crafting recipe really is.
Wouldn't mud function more like qui- I'm just going to shut up, you came up with the idea
Actually, mud probably would function more like quicksand. "Mud" is just a generic term for the block in this case though. Plus, I can't think of anything else to call this, because I'm to lazy to take my time to look on Wikipedia for various dirt-like substances.
We should probably just call it "pitfall block" until we find out what the proper name is.

Water bucket or bottle with dirt
Fine, let's just say that if mud was a pitfall block, that it would be found as a naturally spawning material, as well as craftable. Happy?
