With the introduction of the ender chest minecraft finally had a way of locking your goods from other people. This is especially useful on vanilla minecraft servers or anything similar where you can't lock your stuff. In single player it would be more of a second inventory for getting things without having to travel anywhere. Even though it seems very useful it could be a lot better.
The first problem I found with it is that it has the inventory of only a small chest. This isn't a problem with people who just use it as a inventory in single player or have there items safe in a regular chest, but when all your good stuff has to be in the ender chest in fills quickly. To make sure my stuff wasn't stolen I put all my iron, diamond, gold, emeralds, enchanting materials, potion materials, special blocks, needed items, food, and spare armor and tools. However almost none of this fit. The ender chest should be given a double inventory considering you only get one.
Another thing I noticed is that any pick can break it. This makes sense with something like a enchanting table where you get it when you break it but you only get the obsidian back and not the chest so this isn't needed. The ender chest is 89% obsidian so it would make sense that the only way to break it would be to use a diamond pick. This would stop people from easily wrecking it with a stone pick they just made taking no effort.
I agree it should have a double chest inventory. It's even justified by that you don't store it in the chest, but the space all ender chests link to when you use them.
I would love for it to have at least a double chest's storage. Of course the PVP people are going to complain about it being overpowered but the world does not revolve around them (besides, there's probably a plugin to ban the item on servers anyway).

Under no circumstances do I want villagers building ugly little houses in my world. That's my job.
If you are able to craft an enderchest and fill it with actual valuable items, Congratulations! You have won Survival Mode! Please move on to Creative Mode.
