If you're like me, which in all likelyhood you are not, you really like your skin and the idea that everyone else can see it. If you're also like me, you think that the armors can look pretty bulky and kind of ugly, and don't like the fact that people can no longer see your skin well while you're wearing it.
So you are left with the decision of either personal style or efficiency, not both.
My suggestion is an option to conceal your armor while retaining the physical benefits it gives you, so I can see my skin and have adamantine (yes, I know it's diamond) armor. There would likely have to be some indicator that you are wearing armor, so other people can know. Maybe just subtle on-skin-layer changes, like blank-material cuffs and a belt for the torso and such; nothing that significantly changes the appearance.
why not have it so you can upload armor like you can with your custom mod
I love that idea. My skin has a hat, and I'd love to have to craft a helmet for the hat to appear, and the same goes for the rest of my clothing... although that means that I'd be starting the game off naked.
"He's wearing diamond armor, i better run away"vs "oh, an unarmored adventurer, he should be easy to defeaAAAH"
O LAWL
I was thinking maybe there should be a way to make clothing items from fabric. I currently use a nude character in Survival, because then the "armor" he makes for himself is just clothing.

This may be a fad, but I love dragons, so why the heck not?
The armors should have models to represent each, and you can skin those individual models.
FOR EXAMPLE:
"Hey, that person's wearing armor. And that armor has spiked shoulders! It must be diamond! I shall take precaution at once!!"

I am NOT going to see friend requests, so stop sending them.
I plan to reskin my personal tool set for multiplayer! So i use alien weaponry instead! (make the bow and arrow into a type-1 laser) Id just make the armor look like my current main body, with improvements the better it is (Like blue surging energy for diamond armor) Pretty much what cliff said, as i planned to make by armor look technologically advanced!

Magic have a bigger priority than Technology when it comes to combat, but Mining and Crafting a bigger priority to Magic.
I think it should work just like our skins.
though I guess that would mean we would have to have separate skins for each quality of armor.
Unless some people are just aiming for one type of skin in which case... I guess people can have different quality armors that look the same. Though there should be a way to tell the difference.

<- This is clickable by the way.... CLICK IT. SQUIDS DEMAND YOU DO SO.

Notch has said the outer-armor skin area will not be made necessarily customizable, meaning it's not a real option, but you're free to edit clientside things for now.

Any ideas?
My cloth armor looks like diamond.
Both. It should work normally, but be able the change it in preferences.

Which I'm pretty sure he's right.
If you want fashion, don't wear armor or reskin the armor yourself.
this. please, this.

I second that.

what if you could customize a 'base' set of armor that is tinted by minecraft to reflect the material
wearing appropriate armor also mounts an 'aura' to you, whose color again reflects the level of armor you're wearing
Me too! Then I can make my diamond armor look like leather and completely undermine an identifiable game mechanic!
OH WAIT THAT'S BAD.
