I'd like to propose a new variety of chest: the iron chest.
Currently there are two varieties of chest: the normal chest and the ender chest.
- Normal chests are the standard, basic unit of storage and have the beneficial ability to double up.
- Ender chests take some effort to construct and have the unique security of player-specific, worldwide storage.
An iron chest would serve two very simple purposes.
- The iron chest would be resistant, but not invulnerable (as that would be too OP) to explosion. This might make it desirable for use in hostile or less-secure places.
- Being gray (as opposed to the comfortable wooden color of the traditional chest) it would have different stylistic applications, for those who are more thematically conscious.
To craft an iron chest I'd imagine one would use the same recipe as a normal chest, using iron ingots (or blocks, if Minecraft feels it should be more expensive) instead of wooden planks.
To address balance:
I don't intend this idea to address the multiplayer problem of locked chests or any such thing, although it might have potential in that department.
The chest is NOT invulnerable to explosion - so as not to make it overly secure - it simply resists explosion much more than normal chests do, the way brick resists more than sand.
Maybe the iron chest would simply only be able to be opened if there is redstone powering it. It would also be as blast-resistant as an Iron Door, and also have the same amount of storage as a normal chest, would help make some interesting maps

I find the lack of turtles in your thread disturbing

This is something I would actually root for; I like it.

Erm, ender Chests were added and are invulnerable. If it's solely for more Blast Protection, use an Ender Chest. If it's solely for Aesthetic Purposes, then don't even bother. Regular Chests suit it just fine.

Yes! This is good - redstone-only chests functionality. There are so many applications for that.
Properly locked chests rather than using pistons to put a block over the chest to prevent it from being opened would be a welcomed change.
I think that maybe iron chests should be placeable next to each other, but not join into large chests. Meaning vault rooms could be made to look fabulous and efficient.

This would be good for custom, puzzle maps so to open a chest you have to hit a lever.
I support this idea! I don't feel safe having my diamonds in a chest that can easily be destroyed by a creeper. Maybe make an optional lock for these chests. It'll just be lock + iron chest = locked iron chest
The problem with ender chests is that their storage space is very limited.
In addition to all the previous ideas, maybe they could be pushable by pistons. The current chests cannot, and it would be pretty cool if a metal chest popped out of the floor in a dungeon.
That would make it perfect for adventure maps! Heres an item in a chest that you need to continue, but you can only open the chest once you pull a lever in a different room, or something else redstone.
Hmm, that is an interesting problem. If the chest can only be opened with redstone, what happens when the chest is broken?
Though I really like the idea of redstone-only chests, I haven't a solution.

Wow that's a cool idea!
Maybe when the chest breaks it keeps the stuff in it?
Although that would be awfully inconvenient if you left your diamonds in it and you were out of redstone.
hmmmmmmmmmm

I think thats a good idea. Besides the redstone-opening-map part, there wouldn't be much point.
If a griefer was trying to blow up your house, the chests would remain safe. Is that a good or bad thing? How about you need to use a Iron key to open it. Iron key gets infinite uses btw. And to break the chest, you need an iron pickaxe. So that noobs without iron can't steal it. Although it'd be useless in singleplayer. Maybe give it more invintory space? And there's also that cool look of iron that people might like.

Uuuugh, I hate when people suggest keys for this sort of stuff...
If it offers no protection, why add it? Someone else can craft a key and open your chest, or they can just bypass having a key entirely by breaking open your chest with an pickaxe created from ever-so-abundant iron.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?

Except those have a different type of inventory...
Indeed. While the ender chest blast-protects its contents, it cannot blast-protect contents which are meant to be shared between players.

I have been participating in one of many discussions about locking mechanisms for chests on the Minecraft forum thread located here:

I like your idea of separate chests - frankly I'd be happy either way.

And pushable chests would be very nice
Break the chest.
I like the idea of this.
