Here's what im suggesting: regular chests would remain exactly the same, just they wouldnt have the metal-looking thingy in the front. locked chests would be crafted, by say puttting a piece of iron next to a chest on a crafting table (or maybe some sorta lock item, but that doesnt fit with the general "simplistic" theme of minecraft i think). locked chests would look like the current chest (with the metal thing) and could only be opened by the player who placed them (for SMP). they would take longer to break, and the lock could also be busted with a tool, turning the locked chest into a regular chest (not sure about busting locks). For multiplayer, there would be a option whether to allow busting/breaking other peoples chests. also, busting/breaking a chest wold turn iron golems on you (to fit with Notch's idea of the villagers being angry at you for taking stuff). maybe if they added some sort of abandoned mineshaft guardian mob (undead miners maybe) those would turn on you as well if you broke a locked chest nearby. for multiplayer, there should be like a popup menu in the corner of the chest when you open it (where it currently says "Large Chest" or "Chest")where you can add other players to the list of people who can open it. The popup menu could also let you change the chest name (like Notch mentioned here: http://www.reddit.co...ppointed/c19v72 )
maybe you would instead get a key so you could open the chest, but im not sure how/if that would work, and it seems to complicated.
the point would be that in villages, iron golems would get angry at you for breaking the chests.
also, breaking someone else's chests could be turned off in multiplayer

Then you would see massive walls of locked chests blocking players from passing in multiplayer.
There's no way to make a griefer-proof locked chest. No way at all. If they can be broken, they just break the chest instead of opening it. If they can't be broken, they make gigantic walls of the things around the spawn, trapping players in.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Exactly.
It might be a bit expensive, but if people raid you and steal your stuff, if you had stored all your valuables in the ender chest, it would be safe forever.
the stuff will only stay if the chest is broken
stealing the stuff from the chest will empty all linked ender chests
read up... u obviosly dont know what ur talking about...

No, YOU don't know what your talking about. Ender chests have different inventories per player. Therefore, no one can even see your stuff, much less steal it.

But then again, if it's indestructible, then it would be too overpowered.
I don't know, I support I guess, but honestly my opinion is neutral.

weel at least if offers some protection, unlike the current chests
