One Final Point: If you're completely against airships, or whatever idea, why not have it implemented? You don't have to build an airship, just because the system is there. Heck, you can even form a club! Make it your personal vendetta to destroy all air-based transportation! Actually, that'd be pretty epic. I's like to see sub-cultures forming on mine-craft servers.
To finish off my point: Just because you don't want to use a feature doesn't mean it can't be implemented. (I fully understand this isn't applicable to all features, notably the ones that change the basic mechanics of the game).

This may be a fad, but I love dragons, so why the heck not?
The man makes a fair point. After all, arguments are something I excel at.
Overall, airships must have a risk proportionately balanced to the rate of travel. if airships are going to be relatively quick far above the ground, then there will have to be extensive armor requirements for safe travel when facing airborne marauders.
The hardest part of developing an airship would be an engine and the required systems to transfer energy to the rudder or other directional device (retrorockets, anyone? They could be mounted to the sides of the airship rear) and to the main propulsion system. And what fuel would be needed to operate the vessel? Coal -- and perhaps it would generate smoke blocks signaling the presence of an airship with an engine? It most certainly would!
-- With that, we must also find a new craftable substance with which an engine can be powered without revealing the ship. That, or risk the use of coal to fuel the airship engine system while also attracting the attention of potential airborne mobs and, yes indeed, sky pirates. All in all, the Blue Rogues are inevitable.

I was just thinking, I'd take some flying rock from the flying island, and strap it to a boat. Get enough of it attached to the boat, and it should fly. When I say airship, I mean air SHIP. Then, it'd just use the same construction process as a boat, with that one added material. And ships made of stronger materials, like stone and iron, would be crazy heavy, requiring a LOT of obsidian in order to fly. I mean, if the flying material does turn out to be obsidian, chances are it'll be mostly on flying islands, which puts it well out of most peoples' reach as they'll be at the edges of the world, and obsidian takes AGES to dig up as it is, apparently. If we needed a diamond pick to even get anything from it, that would make it even more difficult to get at, as you'd need to dig up diamond (And thus iron, and thus stone) equipment somewhere along your journey to the edge of the world.
If rocks can arbitrarily fly, why not anything else? A real human, presented this environment, would find a tiny flying island, stick a sail in the ***** and be on his way.

So if you mine out the floating rocks, does the floating island begin to fall?
Airships on the other hand, would make travel far too simple. I see your argument that they would be very difficult to make, but even so I think that airships would give the player far too much control over mobility. It would be a game breaking addition imho.
Just shoot them down!

Only if you dig out too much of it, I'd imagine. I mean, logically, if you take what makes the island fly, it won't fly any more. Unless you build some sort of structure to hold it up. We all know wood is pretty abundant.

That it is. I was actually just getting myself out of the argument, but I've changed my mind. :biggrin.gif:
I think Dragoon has a good idea (But I still like my arcane engine). The faster your airship goes, the greater the risk in using it should be. Fast airships will have to be small and thus easy to kill. Conversely, if you have a giant airship that you spent large amounts of time and resources on, armoured to the teeth and bristling with weapons, then it shouldn't be one cannon shot and you're gone. It should be able to take a beating. I think I would definitely go for a system where speed is inversely proportional to defence and larger size.
As for the actual making of the airship, I believe I have come up with a solution. The first block you must craft when making your airship is the airship block. I'm not sure how you will make this, but someone will come up with something. You build on top of the block, making sure to include all necessary systems and accessories. When done, you right click the airship crafting block and it runs a check. The block checks all the blocks connecting to it on it's top. It then converts all those blocks into an entity. If you included things to float your airship in the original design, it allows you to float your airship. If you included motors, it allows you to drive. The bigger you made it, the more defence you will have and the more motors you will need to move. Smaller airships can one motor and go at a resonable speed. A behemoth using one motor won't be able to move.

Sounds like a good solution to the issue of building an airship. And for my engine idea, I wanted to be able to build replicas of ships from Skies of Arcadia, a game in which the airships used engines for propulsion. Gas-bag airships resemble zeppelins and blimps, and if we are going to have those vehicles, then two different designs would be needed for blimps and airships.

Ropes? My first system doesn't work if you want customisation. I'm really not sure how to do it. I think ropes may be the only feasible way, and I'm not sure that they'll be implemented in that way.

Nice. I've made some EPIC airships (about 4 times as big as this) with cloth. I don't have any screen-shots, though. :sad.gif:
My favourite was the one I made on Spherical's server. It was made to be a passenger airship, with a three story lounge, about 5 rooms, captain's (me) quarters, a front control room, and a gondola control room. Plus engines and fins. Unfortunately someone decided to make it look like a giant ejaculating phallus. *sigh* F***ing griefers.
Also, how did the pig and sheep get there? XD

@Qwill: Stop hallucinating: I never said a thing about ropes of any kind. I am basing any further talk on airships on your second design, as it allows for customization.

Sure they might make for a "smaller" world, but I imagine there'd be just as much to explore by setting down on a mountaintop several miles away from home or just jumping off a train in a random location and seeing what you find.
There would be two worlds in MC - World UP and World DOWN. World UP would be simply group of floating islands very high above World DOWN. World DOWN will be simply land with oceans, lakes etc. Players in World UP will use airships to travel between cities, players in World DOWN will use trains. Players would be able to fly down from World UP to World DOWN on airships and players from World DOWN would be able to build airships to fly up.
That's a rather simplified language you're using to describe the idea, but yeah, I kind of agree.

Why should it need wings? It already has obsidian, which will apparently completely defy gravity.
