The title pretty much says it all, but I'll elaborate.
Lava is not hot enough to destroy diamond. In fact it's typically less than a third of the temperature it would take to destroy a diamond. I know the game isn't exactly steeped in realism, but there's at least a little bit of realism involved and this would be a proper change.
Most everything else could and should be destroyed by lava. Even obsidian can be melted by hotter lavas, although the lesser heated would not. Diamond on the other hand is an extremely resilient material and would not be destroyed by lava.
Diamonds can get destroyed at around 800 celcius. Lava can range from 700 to 1200 regularly. Diamonds can actually explode from extreme heat. Look up video, it is cool.
And just no. If throwing bedrock burns, or even a potion lf fire resistance, diamonds will too.
This "lava physics" is a must because then it would take away that thrill that Notch gets from makeing minecrafters mad when we die and loose our diamonds.
Diamonds are known to shatter into extremely small shards when put under intense heat.
Also, using real-world physics to push a Minecraft argument just buried your suggestion six feet under.

You have 2 choices: +1 me with your computer,
or -1 me with your mind. One of them is less frustrating.
Even if diamonds could resist burning/exploding in lava, it wouldn't be very realistic for you to be able to reach in there with your bare hands and scoop them out.
And for that matter, it doesn't make sense that you could possibly carry lava in a bucket.
Plus, minecraft isn't a very challenging game. Loosing your diamonds in a sea of fire at least can slow you down so you don't burn too quickly.
I find this pretty crazy. First off, you don't just single one item out. What about bedrock? Obsidian? Fire Resistance Potions? Blaze rods? Et cetera. Also, physics have nothing to do with Minecraftia. We have exploding green penises that attempt to thwart us as we delve deep into the earth and mine valuable resources, hauling up tons and tons of stone and ore when finished. Nuff said.
Maybe an old left-over balancing mechanic that attempts to prevent item farms? Or maybe old code that doesn't distinguish between items and mobs for damage?
I don't really see any real reason for items to destroy to a cactus anymore.
Without Physics: This is... The best thing I've ever had!
I've never heard a game which you can dig 2x1 straight mineshafts without it collapsing.
Correction:
You need both pysics and fantasy to have a good minecraft.
Where would we be if there was no gravity for the players and mobs? Where would we be if water didn't flow? Where would we be if arrows didn't fly?
It'd be a pretty shitty game if we didn't have any physics.
Point being, physics and realism are important parts of what makes minecraft fun, but so is the fantasy and the gravity defying blocks.
Physics isn't bad, neither is realism. It's too much realism that ruins the game, and conversly, too much nonrealism ruins the game as well
There needs to be a delacate balance between realism and fantasy for minecraft to be a good game. Disrupting that balance would ruin the game compleately,
(IE collapsing caves, thirst bar, etc would be too much physics, while jumping 20 feet in the air, and magic wands would be too much fantasy)
You ask why diamonds burn in lava?
When diamonds are the hardest material on earth?
Well, think of it like this.
You accidentally drop a piece of diamond in the lava.
It's still sitting there on the bottom, but there's nothing you can do to retrieve it.
You can't just stick your hand into three feet of molten magma.
And by the time you manage to get a fire resist potion, the diamond has already shattered into pieces. (or despawned)

I understand your point. You don't like when you die in lava and your diamonds get destroyed.
But it's not going to change.
It obviously scratches them up a bit. What, you expect Steve to make armor out of slightly scratched iron? Steve is all about top quality products.

-Throw it in lava.
-Win.
But anyway, the only reason lava destroys diamond as an item is because it destroys all items. Cacti destroying items is a little silly though.
