Ask yourself these questions before you respond to a suggestion: 1. Would it add something useful/enjoyable to the game? 2. Would it inconvenience someone else? 3. Would it be mandatory for all players to use the feature, or would it be an option, if they wanted to use it?
I'm wondering if I shouldn't just put the above as my sig, as I foresee a lot of use for it...
My recent post brought up a few issues addressing these ideals.
1) This could severely end up being bad if the whale goes out thousands and thousands of miles away if their location isnt controlled, and the player ends up putting there spawn point far away from anyone else if they change there mind. How would this be addressed? (an inconvenience to the intentions of multiplayer towards other players and themselves)
2) If you can address this issue Ill agree that this could have merit, as long as boats were added as well with larger building area`s to balance this function out within the game. (To keep balance and make it a useful addition, as Notch has said he doesnt want to add anything to the game just to add it, it should have purpose)
3) . I do not think in Multiplayer Survival it would be fair to have an indestructible base. How would this be addressed? Do you agree that whales should be able to be killed for there meat and just not bases alone? (Indestructible bases should never exist so these peoples whom's should be vulnerable as everyone else is in game, everyone should be on equal grounds)
Does everyone else agree that boats are just more accessible to a wider audience? If you tell someone about a game "Oh you go inside a whales stomach to travel" than "You use boats to get around and travel" they are less likely to say "oh that sounds cool". I don't know about your whale fetishes, but boats seem like a more logical alternative to water traveling, and they are less stupid (flameshield).

Alright, but the whales aren't really meant for travel. They might move, and you might leave a whale and find that you've moved a bit too, but they're not exactly meant as a means of transportation.
So really, you probably wouldn't tell someone, "Oh you go inside a whale's stomach to travel".
Did I ever explicitly state that boats can't be in the game? If I did, it was a glaring oversight on my part. I have nothing against boats. I don't see why they even pertain to this thread, though.
Boats are great for travel. Whales are great for leaving something for other players to discover, or for having an aquatic, living base, or for just messing around. I'm not going into detail since I already did that in my first post.
I just dont wanna be in the guts of a whale, makes me feel dumb. Their, i said it! It makes you look pathetic! "Hey, look at that guy who hides in that whale like a coward! GET A PIRATE SHIP!" Then again, thats me...

How about instead of a whale, there's a ship that randomly wanders the oceans like your whale, it would actually make sense and is more accessible. We've already discussed why a base would be a bad, it's wandering around preventing you from actually getting back to it. As for your statement "So really, you probably wouldn't tell someone, "Oh you go inside a whale's stomach to travel".", what if they ask about water travel? Do you just ignore that question they ask, because eventually will find out.

The best games you've never heard of:
Little Big Adventure: Relentless, Little Big Adventure 2: Twinsen's Odyssey, Mischief Makers, Beyond Good & Evil
Obviously you would tell such a person they should USE A BOAT. The idea isn't exclusive to boats. Of course there should be boats, amongst other things. Or maybe not? Maybe they should swim. The point is, it's not for travel, it's not even so much for a base as in "A permanent house to live in, to the exclusion of some other place." Sure, It'd be possible until someone came alone and randomly killed the whale because they're hungry. It'd also be possible for them to check inside the whale before hand and find you, or maybe just something you left behind, like a bed and fireplace, or a chest full of dirt. Who knows?
You don't replace this with a "Randomly wandering ship" Because SHIPS should be controllable. Controllable SHIPS make sense. Controllable WHALES make a lot less sense. So the boats, you drive them, and the whales, they wander. Both ideas are fulfilled.
They're not supposed to be particularly accessible or convenient to any particular purpose. They are whales because, well, I can't think of some other LIVING THING that's big enough and is known for people living in them somehow. I'm sure they are out there. From the sounds of things, they would be ironically better received. It adds to the game the same way having ruins adds to the game, it's something someone left behind, that you find.
PS: It doesn't hurt multiplayer, or infinite maps with the current level generator, or some repeatable navigation pattern. Obviously don't get in if you don't want to possibly get lost, or more importantly, don't stay inside for a few in-game days, as you very likely will get lost. Or, you know, get lost, that sounds fun too, if you're into that, and how better to get lost than to move inside something you can't see outside of.
We've already discussed why a base would be a bad, it's wandering around preventing you from actually getting back to it. As for your statement "So really, you probably wouldn't tell someone, "Oh you go inside a whale's stomach to travel".", what if they ask about water travel? For the life of me I can't figure out how you haven't answered your own questions by reading.
- "why a base would be bad"
It's not a BASE. It's not meant for long term habitation. You go in, make something neat or fill a chest up with something, maybe leave a not saying "hey check it out!" and then -exit the whale-. The whale eventually ends up somewhere else and someone else does the same thing. You're not meant to go find a whale, leave, and then go find that same exact whale. That's just not the purpose.
- "what if they ask about water travel"
It's not TRAVEL. It's -wander-. If they ask about water WANDER, you can tell them about the whale. When someone asks about water travel, you don't give them a whale as an answer (a -solution-), because it isn't one. There can be boats for that.
Boats AND whales. Purpose AND wander, with bases in the latter.
OK, I was misinformed/dumbass, I thought this was meant for travel or a base. This whale is basically a giant note in a bottle where you can just give away stuff? That is what it sounds like to me.

It's really meant for whatever you can do with it. If you want to make a temporary whale-hovel to hang out in for a while, it's totally possible. You can also do the note in the bottle thing. You might even be able to spread some grass around and grow a tree by torchlight if the game allows for grass-seeding some day. :laugh.gif:
It's just another element to the mish-mash of things that work together to make this game awesome. It's all about what you want to do with it. :smile.gif:

I didn't really have an opinion on this but thecraww has really swayed me every problem or insult he has without fail countered and opposed he obviously places alot of faith in his idea and I personally agree with it I think it would be cool and a fun way to interact with other players via leaving messages in ur whalebase

Adding whales that you can live inside wont make the game more awesome.
So far, you have not proved any real purpose for "Being in a whale's stomach" besides a place you can just go in. I think it is completely idiotic and you persist to "protect" this ridiculous idea.
There is no point in having whales JUST so you can go inside them. If I was a whale, I would spit you back out if you tried to enter my mouth. And do we need to explain what the stomach is for? Digesting food. If you went into a whale's stomach, you would begin to dissolve. Not to mention that whales have to EAT also.
