Originally, this thread was about the possibility of obsidian weapons and armor, of which was quickly shot down by the first post due to balance issues involving the availability of obsidian. However, the true adoration towards this material's use isn't the material itself...but the coloration. The concept I presented could, essentially, work...were it coupled to a rarer element.
Within reality, Jadeite spreads amongst a rather wide color pallet and has a hardness equivalent to quartz. However, within the context of Minecraft, this particular element will consist of only its true black color variation. Located within the depths closest to bedrock, this material is mined in blocks used for myriad of things ranging from weapons and armor to ornate blocks of various forms. Its rarity is equivalent to Diamond, for balance purposes, making it a rather expensive ornate block. Upon being mined, Jadeite Ore drops a single Jadeite Shard. These shards can then be used in the creation of weapons, armor, and various vanity blocks.

To be continued upon waking, have to be up early.
Essentially, I'm going to present glass cannon weapons and armor in a directly opposite path of Diamond.
Which is why I expressed less durability in the items. Though, granted, obsidian is easier to obtain than Diamond...so perhaps a better option would be Black Diamond, which is an element equivalent in appearance whilst new and capable of being brought into the game under a more rare circumstance like it's clear blue companion.
Nothing is rarer, or as rare as, obsidian and diamonds. I sighed when I saw the title (weapons and armour), but this could be used in decoration. Can someone think of an ore that isn't used for weapons and armour?
Redstone. Lapiz Lazuli, Emeralds, Coal... Iron can be used for buckets, rails, iron bars... Gold can be used for powered rails, watches... Diamonds can be used for jukeboxes, enchanting tables...
Good fight, argument.

It's called balance.
This could solve the issue of balance, no?
I'm going to edit the OP.
