I was running around and ran into a desert village. Thought about expanding it. When I found out you need a total of 93 sandstone blocks to make a small 5x5 hut! That's crazy! 93 sandstone requires 372 sand or nearly 6 stacks of sand to build.
The regular huts require far less work. Requiring 37 cobblestone, 16 wood, and 40 Planks(or 10 additional wood for a total of 26 wood). 26 wood will require a max of 7 trees. Which wont take that long to find and cut down.
So, raw materials you need to farm is 37 cobble and 26 wood or 372 sand. Ignoring the door and window since those remain the same on both. It just seems like there is so much more work needed to build a desert hut over a regular hut.
Possible fix: Make 4 sand in a square formation provide 2 sandstone. That would cut the total work needed down to 186 or 3 stacks of sand. Which isn't as bad...
I'm not quite sure how you got 61.
The 5x5 huts. You know? Requires a floor of 25 blocks, roof of 25 blocks and then the walls being 48 of the remainder blocks. Which is a total of 98 blocks. But, since the sandstone cost doesn't include the windows or doors, it's only 93 blocks.
There is, but it's not common per se. While you can find the one layer underneath the deserts, it can be hard to get too and leave holes in the desert. Collecting sand just takes skimming across the surface or leveling down desert mountains.
Regardless, that is all irrelevant. Simply build one of the huts right now and you can see it takes 93 blocks excluding the windows and door. Unless you build one of the huts that is 5x4. In which case, it will only take 74 blocks.

Oh derp. Ok I stand corrected.
Anyways, aside my derailment, I agree with you, even if the hut was 61 blocks. Sandstone is too annoying to get. I remember trying to make a decently large sandstone castle... I soon gave up, after clearing so much of a desert.
Or you can, you know, mine some up from beneath the sand.
As I said before, this is still a large hassle to do. As the sand above it will continue to fall and get in your way. You'll end up with holes in your desert. You cannot simply go underground and collect it like you can cobblestone.

If anyone wants to port/remake this, feel free to do that! Or don't. It's up to you, really.
Your idea counts every edge twice. You are calculating surface area not volume.
