I have seen numerous posts on spike blocks, spike-pistons, etc. Now, I am here to present my version of this, but I shan't leave these posts in the dark. Feel free to check some of these out, as I have merged all of these (Some of which are just stupid) into a fleshed out idea.
Now, my textures are NOT very good, but it shows what I mean. I have seen many 'unintelligent' posts on this subject. As tweeted by Dinnerbone:
@Geodeek I want to add them, I'm just not sure how they'd look or function that best suits the game
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When considering implementing spikes into Minecraft, I have come up with(Meh, can't really say I came up with these ) three variations:
1)Spike Pistons
2)Spike Blocks
3)Spike Traps
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Spike Pistons:
Like an ordinary piston, this would occupy one block when it does not receive a redstone signal , but when powered it occupies two.
While my texture sucks, the idea is simple. They would be activated just like pistons.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) Spike Blocks:
Unlike the Spike Piston, these will only ever occupy one block. They will never retract, but can be pushed by pistons. I have a poisoned texture here too!
Now this isn't to say the others can't be poisoned, express your thoughts about poison in the poll above and in the comments below.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) Trap Spikes
Thanks to nearbeer for this idea
Placed like ladders or carpet, the spikes would extend when the block it is attached to or a block next to it is powered.

Hearts of Damage:
Discuss below and in the poll.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Destruction of Blocks:
Now there has been talk of using these to not only damage mobs and players, but to use them to destroy blocks. Clearly there is some controversy over this. Please discuss this below and in the poll.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Destruction of Items:
Another controversy, discuss below and in the poll.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Poison:
Thanks to zaket22 for mentioning this. Express your thoughts in the poll and comments.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Speed:
Would you be slowed to cobweb speed, just be slightly slowed down, or walk normally through spikes?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, I know this isn't the first topic on these, it's just the first really organized one.
Don't forget to vote in the poll, and don't forget to +1!

I think the recipe with Flint is the best.
It's cheap to produce, and also gives more incentive to actually collect flint
beyond arrow production and fire hammers.
Actually, when you think about how useful this can be, the 3 Swords looks like the most balanced recipe.
However, it should be 2 swords instead of 3 because the model has an even number of spikes on it.
I don't like the flint crafting recipe... Flint is brittle and wouldn't last very long realistically. Also it isn't a renewable resource (to the best of my knowledge). I would want spike blocks to be renewable.
So, basically, the exact same mechanics as pistons in terms of redstone, but damages things instead of pushing them? Well, then, I support this.
BTW, I prefer recipe 2. 6 iron per is a little costly, and I need all the flint I can get for arrows. Although, I could live with flint, as then I could just make a skele trap.

I have no idea what to put here, nor do I have any idea what to make my profile pic. Ideas welcome, I suppose. Now satisfy my like *****ing hogging self and give me a little rep, please and thank you?
YAY! I officially like this. But I think that there should be a recipe for Large Spikes that act like cacti but can be put next to blocks. Also, large spikes shouldn't hurt when touched on the side.

I haven't even bought MineCraft, I don't have the money...
It fits in with the minecraft costs and complexity of contraptions, and 3 iron isn't too much to spare when it comes to something like this. Apart from that, this is a very nice idea and fits in with the simple aspects of minecraft, something like this could easilyget put into MC without anyone complaining. ↑1 for you
Very creative thought out use of the spike block. Nothing should collect dust in anything. This will actually make good traps much more simple. But would the Spike block deal an All-Out sort of damage, or an Overtime sort of damage? How much will it deal in the All In one, or the Overtime, whichever one the Spike Deals?
First method seems best tome, its actually somewhat logical. Its like youre snapping the hilts of the sword and using the blades, and it cost more iron.
But I think a tool this powerful should be harder to craft, I.E. maybe in two different steps. Step one would be with the swords and halfslabs to make the spikes, and step two might be surrounding an iron compact block with wooden planks to make the base, then craft them together with two more iron bars. If made like that, the cost would fit the strength of the item: 17 Iron bars, 3 sticks, 8 wooden planks, and 3 half slabs.
There should be a separate spike block that extends half a block more than the one you suggested. It should also go through blocks, so you can make hidden spike traps and walls of spikes that you can't just jump over.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
I had an idea for spike blocks I never really posted, just left collecting dust in my mind. Spikes would be placed just like ladders, only that they can be put on the top and bottom sides of blocks. The spike block looks like a couple of transparent-ish holes, but with pointy spears coming out of them when powered. Some guy above wanted flint, but I honestly think it needs a more expensive recipe of iron. Maybe the recipe for my idea would be bottom row full of iron plus the center iron. Just like yours, spike blocks are somewhat visible but not detectable in a dark jungle temple as trip wires are.

That's a good idea. Adding that to the OP after I make more textures
Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
Please click the dragons, they need to grow. Also, my fully grown dragons can be found in my bio.
What if a piston pushes a powered Spike block to the side?
The "Spike" block would be separated from the "base" block

The piston would not extend.

I really like this recipe. Adding to OP.
