The idea I had at first was a single enchantment for maps that would allow you to see other players. However, after searching for similar ideas I've refigured the suggestion to multiple enchantments for maps such as:
- Scrolling - With this enchantment the player would only need to make one map as the visible land on the map would scroll on and off as the player walked around.
- Archeologist - Any temples, dungeons, or chests would cause the 16x16 chunk(s) they're located in to be highlighted light green indicating that one of the aforementioned are there, though only as long as the area has already been visited and is no longer clouded over.
- Hunter - This enchantment would make any mobs within your vicinity (50 blocks maybe?) show up on your map as a red dot.
- Gatherer - This would show any pumpkins, sugarcane, fallen apples, cocoa beans, melons, etc growing in your vicinity, perhaps by coloring the pixels the same color as their respective plant.
- Farmer - This would show any animals in your vicinity as a green dot.
- Assassin - This would show other players on the map as a blue dot only if the area the player is at has been visited and is no longer clouded over.
Also the following additions to maps I think would be interesting:
- Atlas - This would be a new crafting recipe, after collecting any 9 consecutively numbered maps place them into the 9 crafting slots in a crafting table and get an Atlas that as long as you carry in your inventory you can press M on your keyboard and a full window/screen map will pop up and show you the entire world and where you are on it. However, just like the maps if you haven't been somewhere then it will be clouded over.
- Waypoint - Fairly self explanatory, but this would allow players to place points of interest on maps, by pressing M while looking at the map.
Atlas might also be impossible. The world is infinite after all, so you'd only get a tiny dot or line at the center with an entire screen of clouds surrounding it. Not to mention that it might also have to infinitely generate terrain when crafted just to have the image ready to be uncovered as you explore.

Only issue is the atlas would be huge... that much data storage might be an issue. And seeing the entire world wouldn't help very much seeing you would be 1 extremely small dot on it.
The rest I support, but perhaps have homeward enchant, while your holding a map it points an arrow at the spawn point (That can be reset by sleeping in a bed).
Groan lag made me miss the original atlas comment... so... just keep it going.

Hey guys, thanks for the great feedback, I definitely hadn't considered the infinite world bit. Hows about the atlas displays a continuous map consisting of the maps you made it from? And if you want to add to the atlas you would place any new maps and the atlas in crafting slots and get an updated atlas that would now show the new land area in conjunction with what was already displayed previously.
Oh and souljabri557 I was definitely thinking waypoints on regular maps as well as the atlas. And scrolling is exactly the opposite of what the map does now where it shows a specific bit of land while your dot moves around on it as you move. Instead with the scrolling enchant as you move your dot remains in the middle of the map but points in the direction you're heading while the land on the map is shown moving on and off the map as you walk around.
FireHawkDelta what makes you say they're all over powered, specifically?

A friend and I were messin around with maps in game and noticed that if we both are carrying the same numbered map then we both show up each others map AND the areas of the map explored by anyone holding the same numbered map as you also show up for you too...I figure this is a little known fact which also makes the assassin enchantment kind of moot.
