This is a suggestion I thought for a while. Similar to real life, buckets eventually decay, corrode, or rust. This can be used on Minecraft buckets so if you are storing water, milk, or lava, the durability bar goes down very slowly. (I was thinking about 3 hours, or 9 Minecraft days) If the bucket's durability bar runs out, the bucket will disappear and water or lava will spew out on the block you're standing. If the bucket is holding milk, nothing happens.
This will add some difficulty due to the risk of being killed by lava spewing out of your bucket, and make it a bit more realistic. However, there are major downfalls:
1. Chest storage. If you are playing on a SMP server, then you'll have the risk of lava or water spewing out on top of your chests while you're offline. This could be a problem, so the durability bar has to pause while it's in a chest to avoid this.
2.Griefing tool. If your chests can be opened on a SMP server, griefers can easily place lava buckets inside your chests, then letting it do the griefing. Same with the first problem, this can be solved by pausing the durability bar when its in a chest.
Notes:
- Used milk buckets can still be used for cake recipes, and used lava buckets can still be used as furnace fuel.
- Used buckets can be repaired with other used or unused buckets, just like pickaxes, shovels, swords, etc.
...eh, this would be more an annoyance than anything else. Granted, it would give one motivation to own more than one bucket at a time, but by this point everyone is already accustomed to endless bucketry.
Wow, not even one day and you want it locked because nobody is replying?
I've seen about twenty views already yet not even a "Doesn't seem like a good idea." Until now that is...

It WOULDN'T break, the durability bar will pause.. If it did griefers will easily use it to grief by placing lava buckets in chests. I've said it in both downfalls, the durability bar will have to stop while it's stored in a chest.
I think this would be very annoying as a gameplay mechanic. With tools, when it breaks you only have to make another tool if you want to keep mining, killing etc. But with this you could die if you don't keep an eye on your lava bucket and if your water bucket breaks while you are in your house you have to make another bucket right away to pick up the water again, whereas you don't have to do this with tools. And it sucks for you if you have no iron left.
Basically, I don't support a feature where you have to keep your eye on a durability bar, otherwise you die and all your stuff burns.

That's what I WANT the players to do, to be careful of your buckets. Tekkit players can manage their nuclear reactors very well without their Uranium Cells exploding, I sure some people can manage a few buckets. Also, as I said, it adds a little pressure and difficulty to the game.
