The world of minecraft should use different mechanics than the real world.
I hope that it evolves into a world that has a completely setting than anything that we are suggesting it must become.
Just imagine how the world would be if pieces of dirt floated in the air when you set them down.
Imagine giant swastika-shaped airships. Imagine boats that are literally a 10-tall stack of wood floating in the water, but for some reason not rolling over to it's side. There needs to be something to make them LOOK like somewhat functional vehicles.
The reason I care about the ability to build ships out of blocks, rather than craft them, is because I already can build a boat. I've built a fair number of them, actually. But none of them go anywhere. None of them ever will. And that's depressing. If there were an in-game mechanism to allow us to make actual functioning vehicles, out of blocks, we'd be able to travel in style.

This may be a fad, but I love dragons, so why the heck not?
why even have vehicles anyway? it would just get more confusing than it needed to be
HAVE FUN WALKING EVERYWHERE AND ONLY BEING ABLE TO CARRY SO MUCH.
Sorry, to hear you weren't able to take all your supplies before booking it from your BURNING fort, to bad you didn't have a wagon/Flying vehicle to store your goods on while making an escape!
i didnt mean no transportation. i meant vehicles would just be confusing. horses or mules would be a more logical choice over vehicles

Reality is exactly what you perceive it to be
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, gotta ask, what's confusing about vehicles? I must be missing something, because I hear it a lot, and I don't understand. I'm all for mounts too, and maybe using them together to make carts. Carts would be awesome. Is it how they're powered? How they're made? How they're used? Please elaborate.
Unless you're on flatlands I don't think vehicles are good ideas at all, and heck, will the tracks of the minecart be able to go up and down?
Actually I agree with you, since the area's in infdev are horribly mountainy I would rather make a boat and float along the rivers and only stopping to make a channel for boats.

Snake made a thread around here that I can't seem to find, that suggest if to tracks were next to each other and one was one block higher, they would combine at an angle.

im not dumb ur a coal miner and im a lava miner so im smarter and cooler
Sounds good, but that would then make it into a triangle while everything else is a cube.
Now I'm not saying Notch should never have some variety in this game, but it would mean that ramps will also be added, so most likely no more steps anymore.

That sounds feasable but I would rather have my boat.
Cause it's might calm at the rivers center... OH SNAP WATER FAAAAAAAAAAALL!!!

Traditionally, people laying rail lines would go through mountains.
Why should a game mostly about mining go OVER mountains?
Elevation changes can be added later, but we don't need them for a rapid transit system.
No offense, but I'm not liking any of your ideas that I've seen, from any thread.
Well, I kind of take that back. I like some of your ideas (like ailments, and of course vehicles will definitely be necessary after a time), but with every idea you propose you make it immensely complicated compared to the rest of the game. I understand that the game will most likely become more complex as it goes into beta and into finished product, but I can't see it getting this complicated.
tl;dr I like your ideas but they are too complicated for Minecraft.

The more Swiss cheese you have, the more holes you have.
The more holes you have, the less Swiss cheese you have.
Therefore, the more Swiss cheese you have the less Swiss cheese you have.

I've been looking at the way he does things, and none of it is complicated. Most of it's pretty simple actually.
He just goes really REALLY far into every single idea, with lots of specific details. Any given part of one of his ideas is simple, but when put together, the idea as a whole becomes quite ornate, with many tiny details put together in a rather static sort of way.
Personally, I prefer lots of very simple, very open-ended game components, giving players freedom to come up with stuff never intended in the game. (Like the guy in DF who used the explosive potential of alcohol to launch his fortress off the map... The fortress was shaped like a space ship BTW) I prefer elegantly simple tools, which the players are free to put together in whatever way they want, be it simple, thuggish, ornate, efficient or beautiful.

Maybe one point of confusion is the various complex applications of the more simple game mechanics? I like the idea of taking a simple game mechanic, and making something complex out of it (Or mixing game mechanics together, which this seems very prone to and I look forward to enjoying). I think most of the suggested game mechanics are still pretty simple (personal opinion of course, still easily code-able) but then the examples that are given are a more complex form of those mechanics. Just a tired observation before bed.
Alright back to the topic of transportation I think it's safe to say we can't really suggest anything solid untill Notch announces that either:
A) We will have mounts.
:cool.gif: We will have a choice multiple forms of transportation.
C) Magic will some how be used for travel.
Untill we can get a lcear idea on what we can suggest for such topics I believe we should let the topic die for now.

I honestly hope that :cool.gif: will not be present yet, simply because mounts will be a new thing in the game and will most likely need to be evaluated before other mounts/vehicles can be added.
I think modes of transport might be a nice touch. Not just Infdev, but Indev [aka] as well. I also like the mount idea the most. They're fast, and easy to get through tight spots like you can. I'd love this feature to appear someday.

They're simple, easy to understand, easy to code, can be implemented simply then improved piecemeal, and have obvious crafting patterns:
Sand=Air
Riding cart:
[iron]
Inventory cart:
[iron]
Track, where the iron can be replaced by any craft material except wood, and wooden rails come from sticks:
[iron]
[iron]

And what if you looked over your boat and saw this? It's fake but still, sea monsters could be added just to make nowhere safe.
