I apologise if this post is a bit necro to some people, but I'll state my suggestion anyway to see if it sells.
MINECRAFT CHESS
(not the internal chess table that must be right clicked to play, or a field with 32-odd players, but a life-sized chess board with large useable pieces.)
I was busy tending to my Minecraft mansion when it occured to me, wouldn't it be nice to have one of those garden chess sets, like other mansions do? So I attemped to make a chess set myself out of black/white wool and realised that not only must the squares of the chessboard be at least 3x3 each, but it is hard to make chess pieces which are easily distinguishable and can be easily moved from one square to another. I literally had to break a piece into 'pieces' to transport it to another square. And so I suggest having block-shaped chess pieces that not only look good for any Minecraft castle out there, but can also be of use for those who don't play chess.
The board can be created by alternating 64 stone/sandstone placed on the ground, (both being relatively plain in texture and of contrasting colours)
I wouldn't use obsidian or cobblestone, even if it is darker in colour to stone, just because of its rough texture. I wouldn't use wool for the chessboard either, because it is inefficient and a fire hazard.
The chess pieces are made using stone for black or sandstone for white, with wool on the bottom. They can be up to two blocks high (three blocks for the king and queen maybe), base area being small enough so that the 1x1 chessboard squares can be seen beneath the pieces.
Pawns can be crafted using one stone, one wool, and other pieces are created by adding extra stone to the pawn via crafting table.
Im not looking for an automated redstone-powered chess board, since that would be too much programming, just the aesthetics of chess pieces.
Now for the uses of these chess pieces on Minecraft, since people will be asking what is the use of chess in a game that is extremely good already?
The pieces are up to two blocks high, including pawns which would be around the size of fences, so mobs can neither walk through a wall of pieces nor jump over them. (Except for spiders of course). We can also make it so the player can just squeeze through the pieces, maybe even be able to walk through the pieces like a ghost.
The pieces can be removed using two hits barehanded, so they can be easily removable and placeable, like a real chess game (this can result in temporary fences against hostile mobs.)
Or you can move the pieces by pushing them (similar to pushing sheep around) This can be problematic if the mobs are able to push the pieces too.
Each piece may have a special ability, ie. right-click a rook to mount it like a turret, you cannot move around in it but you'll be safe from non-climbing mobs, or the knights can have a non-lethal knockback effect on the mobs.
Also, I think we can incorporate Endermen into this idea, since they like picking up things.
When an Enderman (or a group of Endermen) come across a chessboard (it can be just chess pieces lying around) they will ignore everything around them (including the player they were just chasing), drop whatever they are carrying as item drops, and will pick up the chess pieces and attempt to play chess. I got this idea from the 'creeper vs cat' patch.
If an Enderman is chasing you, you could either place water/lava on the ground (which kind of ruins the landscape a bit) or you can place a chess piece on the ground so that the Enderman will ignore you. While it is holding the chess piece, attack it till it drops dead or leave it to despawn on the spot.
Or if an Enderman is holding a block you need (like an ore or something valuable) you can safely remove the block from it by giving it a chess piece.
You can protect your buildings from curious Endermen by placing pawns all the way around the borders of your structures. We may have to replenish the pawns if the Endermen despawn whilst holding the pieces.
You can also use these pieces as a makeshift base in the End, so that you can focus all your energy on the Enderdragon rather than having to fend off some Endermen you accidentally looked at.
Thats it, I'm out of ideas on this topic. Please reply if you have any more ideas on a set of chess pieces.
... or if you have a better idea involving chess.
It is an interesting idea, but I don't see it fitting into Minecraft. It may be kind of useful to have in some situations but compared to the situation where it isn't useful it just seems to be wasteful.
