Personally, I think it is a decent idea. A compass, or perhaps a map instead (due to the fact that a map would actually have readable coordinates on it in real life). It makes more sense this way, and gives more reason to have to obtain a compass/map. I would say that it only would hide coordinates this way though, and not everything else that F3 has to offer.
I think it would be cool if we had to have a compass in our possession in order to get the coordinates from F3.
I don't particularly agree.
I use F3 ALL THE TIME when testing out my various mods, because F3's not meant to be used as a compass. It's a debug screen. I use it to collect information from garbage dumps, as well as information of allocated RAM.
Yes, I was only referring to the coordinate information you get by hitting F3. It would be nice if you could get that information by having a compass in your inventory, to actually give the compass a purpose.
The problem with this is that it blurs the line between a debug screen and a game feature.
Its roughly equivalent to seeing the timecodes and stuff during a TV show. We know they exist, but the home viewer isn't supposed to see them under normal circumstances.
So by making a compass (a game feature) a requirement for a debug function, you cross the line between the two.
The compass, in its current form, is pretty much useless unless you set up base camp where you originally spawned. You should be able to place a marker that your compass points to, like a beacon.
F3 is a debug function. Rumor has it that it will eventually be disabled to players. Far more appropriate, I think, would be to give an added function to the compass, allowing you to see your current co-ordinates on right click, without needing to see all the extra clutter F3 puts on the screen.
The only reason why I disagree with this is because, when your playing on a server and your lagging a bit, people with optifine use f3 to check the lag spikes, fps, etc. and on a server that is not creative you will have to craft a compass and it will just be a waste of time, even on single player as well, its like saying you need to have a mushroom to use f5. Just a waste of time. the "f" commands are for your own personal use to customize the game to your liking other than that it should not be affiliated with any of the items in game. But if you have a compass in your hand, you can right click and it will show your coordinates, but other than that its useless..
