So a lot of people are always talking about how useless tamed Wolves and Ocelots are because they don't really do much. Not only this, but Wolves even have an infamous reputation for almost always jumping into lava when around it! So I was thinking, why not let players upgrade their pets in a sort of RPG like manner?
I haven't really worked out the details yet, but maybe every time your Wolf kills a monster, it would gain EXP like the player. Or maybe whenever the player gets EXP, the Wolf would get it too if it's around. But as we all know, EXP is used for is enchanting gear, and everyone knows that Dogs can't enchant stuff! So I was thinking that instead, every time your pet Dog gained a level, it would gain a perk point. And what do you do with these perk points you as?
You would use the perks to upgrade your Wolf into a lightning fast killing machine that still enjoys a good belly rub every now and again. For example, you could spend a perk point to make your Wolf do more damage, or maybe get more health or armor. All of the upgrades would have Minecraft approved names, like "Diamond Fangs" for a damage increasing upgrade, or "Golden Paws" for a speed enhancing upgrade. Since it's a perk tree, the next upgrade in the branch would cost more perk points. Like for example, "Leather-Hard Fur" would only cost one perk point while "Chainmail-Hard Fur" would cost 2 perk points and so on. Since you only get one perk point per level, it would still be a challenge in order to get your Wolf the more higher level upgrades, so it's not overpowered. It would also give time for you to form a special bond with your Doggy buddy, and if he/she ever falls in battle, it would create a much more emotional moment than "just another dog".
I haven't really thought up an idea for Cats yet, but maybe you guys can help! If you liked or disliked the idea, please be sure to leave a comment, I'll accept any and all praise or criticism. Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it!
I support! maybe cats "perk points" could be something like larger creeper-scaring radius, and another wolf one would be intellegence, like no lava-diving, no creeper-chasing etc. one for both pets could be (expensive) armor-wearing and (even more expensive) respawning.
Large creeper scaring radius is good, how about:
A hunt button which you can click to make it hunt something that would drop meat, make it collect it and then bring it you or put in a special pet chest or something
Creeper warning call
A loud hiss that could be heard 50 blocks away when a skeleton or zombie or ghast or something comes near
So, I know this is an old thread, but since it's been bumped twice today I thought I'd include a link that might make the folks looking for this functionality happy. At the very least maybe it won't get necro'd as much?
As it happens there is a fantastic mod for exactly this thing, and it comes with a bunch of other cool bonuses, too.
Check out Doggy Talents; it has your skill system, and adds some AI tweaks like the ability to play fetch with your dogs. There are also optional settings for dog hunger or invulnerability (although they still become unable to fight if they take too much damage too quickly) in case you get too attached to them. Oh yeah, and you can name them/specify their skins individually!
It's been my favorite mod for...well, basically forever, though it seems the mod has transitioned to a new maintainer so it might be a bit before it's back up to the same glorious shape it once was.
As much as I'd like to not have to mod my client for these things, I somehow doubt they'll ever be added to vanilla Minecraft. Long, long ago, Jeb mentioned wanting to add dog breeds, which is basically just the unique-skin aspect of this mod. He's basically running the show now and it doesn't even seem to be on the wishlist; cats got that feature instead. And that isn't even going into how it would almost certainly break the game in a million different ways.
I love the mod, but I feel like it probably won't stop being a mod anytime soon.

But I kind of like the idea of being able to train them, so I support.
