I tried searching and couldn't find that this was suggested. I know that if you have a chimney, you can place netherrack on the bottom for the chimney fire, and then have a hidden netherrack at the top of the chimney for a smoke effect or use cobwebs to give the effect of smoke, but I think it could be much better than that.
It would be great if where ever there was fire, little grey squares (1 block wide) would continuously generate not to far apart so that it forms a line, (maybe they could slowly grow and fade away and then disappear), but would eventually disappear when they reach a roof or when the reach so many layers high. You could see the smoke from a far away (for example if you were many chunks away from it chimney smoke may be barely noticeable, but something like a forest fire would be seen).

I don't know if this would cause lag though.
