Just a small idea I had when thinking about emerald being in the game... Always wished you could have a bright red block in the game, so far that's a no-go. Also always filling chests with redstone without a simple way to store them...
How about if you place redstone in the 9x9 grid, it makes a Ruby Block, could simply be a red version of the emerald block. If you put a Ruby Block into the crafting grid, you get 9 redstone back. Puts a reason behind collecting redstone if you are just a builder. Plus it seems to fall in line with Lapis Lazuli, which would make it seem less alien. Redstone, Lapis Lazuli and Emerald would be similar ores in how they behave, too.
I was thinking of it just simply being an inert block, no inherent properties. Just a red, ruby coloured block. You could use it as redstone storage, but aside from that just a building material. Again, think of Lapis Lazuli or Emerald blocks.

Let me know what you think.
It does.
Actually I think that you should be able to craft four redstone for a ruby. Sort of solidifiying dust into a rock.
