I agree with this idea completely. I like the oroginal idea better than most of the small additions floating around. I think that there should be minumal changes added to make this work, as in keep it as close to the current reputation of minecraft while still making people want to back to the end. And yes I know there are endermen farms, but that's simply not enough of a reason to go back to the end.
I do like the idea of the end staying a finite are of land, but at the same time I wouldn't mind if there was an endless number of islands, so I'm kind of undecided on that.
An interesting idea, and I must admit that I truly do enjoy the prospect of the realm changing drastically upon destruction of the Enderdragon. However, if you're going to go that rout, I would suggest that you alter the lore to reflect a land corrupted by the Ender...rather than it being their native realm.
Perhaps this realm, of which could reflect the skylands, aether, or a hybridization of the two, was invaded by the Ender...of whom began corrupting such. The Dragon itself may have been native to this realm and tainted, becoming the Enderdragon that sealed this realms fate...bringing forth the terraforming of these lands into what we currently know as The End. Upon your defeat, however, this once glorious realm returns to its former glory...and the Dragon of whom was once corrupted now flies pure of the taint as a passive mob in homage to your success over the invasion.
I wouldn't make the composition of such consist of Mycelium...I'd much rather see a new block...at least as much as the Nether in terms of variation. Truly, I believe both the Nether and this new realm should be fleshed out quite a bit until they have as much content as the Overworld. Be that as it may, I would also suggest that players could harvest Crystal to use in the creation of portals to this new realm.
So, you create a portal of Crystal blocks, just as you would Obsidian for the nether, and then toss a bucket of water or something into the space provided...and you have a portal for this new realm. The End portal could self destruct or simply cease functioning...and you could be provided Crystal Blocks to make a portal upon the Enderdragon's defeat as a drop or surrounding the egg, enough to make your portal back when you cross through to go home.
To be honest, some of these Ideas are perfect. In my opinion, I think the Enderdragon should have a better death. As the enderdragon dies, there is a blinding explosion and when it fades, the sky is light. And there should be cut scenes for the start and end of the battle. I think in general it needs to be more epic.
Hmm. Yes, I was actually thinking this for a while. The enderdragon, an "oppressor" of sorts has been defeated. So now the place grows a sun and the place becomes more hospitable. I especially like the new alchemy reagents. We need more effects, and I always loved Alchemy. but what I really want as an ingredient is....
A netherwart substitute. It can be used to make unique potions, or it can be used in the place of netherwart for awkward ones, or both. This ingredient can only be found in the End. Enderwart. I'm not creative lol

I always hated the fact that people see it as a boss room. I think many other people see it as a canvas of sorts. It can be easily improved on by some few minor, but visible touches. I've seen cities in the end, and hell, someone can even base a server in the end, and make the overworld just somewhere to go for a while. If the end is a boss room, the overworld is just a base, and the nether is just somewhere to go for some blaze rods. The end is an end game place, but what if someone had the will to check back at the stronghold and just see what happened? I was pissed about the end, and I guess many others were too about the end, by just being maybe a rock in the middle of nowhere. It's the same situation about this like with the nether. Back when the nether was added, it really was just there for lava and soul sand, and alot of people were pissed. The only reason people made suggestions for this is because they saw improvement. The end is basically the same thing as the nether back then, but what makes people think that it should not be changed, and just be a floating rock, is because you fight a boss there. Keep in mind that this is after the dragon. Any ways of improving the end is good, it just matters how it's done. If you read this without skimming, you have my respect.

Thank you all for the feedback. Just to address one point, I think that making the Endermen how they used to be is definitely a bad idea. There's a video somewhere on Youtube that shows what happens when the "classic" Endermen are left to do what they want to a world and...well, it isn't pretty.Especially if there were more of them spawning, this would basically be saying, "Congratulations, you win. We guess you don't need this world any more, so let us get rid of it for you."
When you first enter the end and the dragon is dead, the crystal bridges and other islands already have spawned. But it is still end-dark.
Then the sun rises. (green sun?) The day would be 17 minutes long and night 3 minutes (moon is a square blue-green planet=minecraftia)
Interesting idea. I kind of like and don't like the idea of "Minecraftia" being the End's moon. Like, because it would be a pretty cool thing to look at, but don't like because it implies that the End itself is Minecraft's moon, which I think actually would take away from the mystery of the End, just a little bit.
Completely love this, and I know WHY you used mycel, but it should be more unique to the end. A little more work, but more fun :P.
Maybe having a reaction to water like netherrack to fire?
I recently took a look at a video of an interview that Jeb and others did at Minecon, and it was mentioned that they actually do have plans for the End to transform into a more beautiful dimension after the dragon is beaten. It would seem that this idea isn't so unlikely after all!
Looking back on this topic today, because it seems like time to revive/revise it. There have been some big changes since when this was written, though. Like all animals having their own breeding item, a new boss, and even a legitimate way to get Night Vision potions in the game. Clearly a lot needs to change. To that end, I'm putting a poll on the opening post regarding some things that are looking dated.

True survival server, and fun!
I agree.
