I have just some basic suggestions regarding multiplayer that I have been wanting for a while now, and since Mojang is doing this merger thing I feel like it's more likely to happen. Here are my suggestions:
-Have an in game option to download worlds from multiplayer servers.
All too often have I spent days of work building something only to have the server get shut down or the world reset. I realize server owners can make old worlds available to download but that puts the responsibility on the owners when the players on the server should be able to do this anyway in my opinion.
-Make playing with friends easier.
If multiplayer is going to be the core of the game now, why not make a system that makes it easier to immediately join friends games without worrying about setting up server software or finding a good, dependable public server? If it can be done on xbox 360, why not PC? This could be somewhat outsourced to Steam considering it's community and connectivity features that are similar to xbox live. I feel like one of the biggest turn offs for new players is the fact that the majority of servers are overloaded with plugins and that they have to set up server software just to play with maybe a couple friends. Update 1.3 is said to feature an automatic scanning for LAN servers and easy connectivity for people on local networks but considering I don't live at my friends house it would be nice to have something similar for friends to play together over the internet.
-Have an in game option to download worlds from multiplayer servers.
It's the owner's responsibility to put up the world for download if they want to, if they do not want you to, you should not be able to download the map. It's as simple as that.
-Make playing with friends easier.
I don't believe that's how LAN works. Anyway, you don't have to set up any software to play on a server, and the person who does doesn't have to set up that much because of the merge. "Server lists" exist already or can exist I believe, because of the iPad Companion App.

Even if you think it's the owner's responsibility and choice to put a world up for download, you can't really say it wouldn't be beneficial to make some sort of in game option to download multiplayer worlds if there was also an option for owners to control whether or not people could download it.
I'm not talking about making LAN easier, I'm talking about making playing with friends over the internet easier. On the xbox 360 version you can simply go to your friends list and press a button to join their game, it would be nice to have something like that on PC. I never said you had to setup software to play on a server I said you had to set up software to run your own private one unless you wanna pay for hosting or rely on another person you don't know for a server to play on which will eventually probably get shutdown and you will lose the stuff you built on their world because they didn't care to put it up for download which is a good example of why my first suggestion would be good.
Also, I repeatedly said "in game" because even though there is a lot of outside resources I feel like there is no reason it shouldn't all be in game just to make things easier. Not everyone has iPads...
I don't support the downloading of maps but I do like what you suggested about adding the ease of creating a multiplayer game like the Xbox (just join who ever is on your friend's list or whatever minecraft's equivalent will be). Ever since I got Minecraft PC I missed the ease of just opening a world and waiting for people to join. Now these days I have to download a new .jar, port forward, etc.
Can I just ask why you guys don't support downloading maps? I just hate that whenever I spend weeks on a server building and stuff it eventually gets reset or if it is a small server it gets shut down and I lose all my work, and I know I'm not the only one.

Because its creates an environment thats nurtures cheating and griefing in the small portion of the population thats prone to it. Imagine raiding parties being able to fully examine your structures and hiding spots using a simple map editor Also entire regions stripped of precious materials (which is why they stopped showing seeds in MP, and the popularity of anti X-ray and ore obstificators plugins are so high).
A secondary issue is bandwidth. Either in, or out, of the game stream, it means the server will have to lock, copy, prepare and then package region files for download. This could potentially be a drain resources and bandwidth if someone was able to leverage it in a DOS attack.
The first point is good I had not thought of that before Starlinvf, but I still think if the server admins had an option to turn downloads off it would be an easy solution to that problem for those types of servers. I'm thinking more about the casual, non-pvp, just building servers which is mostly what I play on.
As for the bandwidth, there could also be an option to limit the amount of downloads for each user every day/week and it would be much harder to start a DOS attack and instances of lag would be minimal.
