I had an idea that I thought would be really cool. A couple of new weapons. These weapons would be crafted very similarly, but they would have very different uses. Because they take a lot more materials than a sword, I would think they should do more damage.
The first weapon is the Warhammer.
Crafting -
It is crafted like an axe, and a picaxe on top of eachother.
Damage -
A Warhammer deals 1/2 heart more than the corrosponding sword.
Wood and Gold both deal 21/2 hearts of damage without any enchantments (These swords deal 2 hearts)
Stone deals 3 hearts of damage without any enchantments (A stone sword deals 21/2 hearts).
Iron deals 31/2 hearts of damage without any enchantments (An iron sword deals 3 hearts).
Diamond deals 4 hearts of damage without any enchantments (A diamond sword deals 31/2 hearts).
Durability -
When unenchanted, all Warhammers have the same durability as the sword of that material.
Gold has a durability of 33
Wood has a durability of 60
Stone has a durability of 132
Iron has a durability of 251
Diamond has a durability of 1562
Warhammer Enchantments -
Hardness, I-III
Hardness makes the warhammer last longer in the same manner as unbreaking would on a picaxe.
Hardness cancles out looting, similar to silk touch canceling out fortune.
Weight, I-IV
Weight increases the damage the warhammer deals in the exact same manner as sharpness would on a sword.
Other than these two enchantments, there are the same enchantmets as a regular sword (Except Sharpness).
Warhammers also have a higher chance of getting knockback than other weapons do.
The second weapon in the Battleaxe.
Crafting -
The Battleaxe is crafted as a Warhammer, but is simetrical. In other words, it is crafted like two axes facing different directions.
Damage -
The Battleaxe deals 1 heart more than the corrosponding sword, or 1/2 heart more than the Warhammer.
Wood/Gold both deal 3 hearts of damage without any enchantments (These swords deal 2 hearts)
Stone deals 31/2 hearts of damage without any enchantments (A stone sword deals 21/2 hearts).
Iron deals 4 hearts of damage without any enchantments (An iron sword deals 3 hearts).
Diamond deals 41/2 hearts of damage without any enchantments (A diamond sword deals 31/2 hearts).
Durability -
All Battleaxes have one and a half times as much durability as the sword of that material.
Gold has a durability of 50 (Original of 33)
Wood has a durability of 90 (Original of 60)
Stone has a durability of 198 (Original of 132)
Iron has a durability of 377(Original of 251)
Diamond has a durability of 2343 (Original of 1562)
Battleaxe Enchantments -
Speed I-III
Speed increases the players attack speed (Only wiith that specific weapon) a large amount, (Similar to the berserker axe in Dwarves vs. Zombies beta.twitch.tv/rurikar22/).
Speed does not cancle out damage enchantments (Sharpness, Bane of Arthopods, Smite), but it does cancel out Fire Aspect.
Other than this enchantment, there are the same enchantmets as a regular sword.
Battleaxes have a higher chance of getting sharpness than other weapons.
Possible other idea The Spear?

These have been suggested before several times, and every time they have been shot down because Minecraft isn'c combat-oriented enough to warrant a monster-slaying tool type other than the Sword. Besides, most of these are straight upgrades to the Sword with little downside or balance.
