Oceans in minecraft are extreamly common especially when u go farther away from spawn, and i was thinking for a biom thats this common should it not contain more then just squids and rare islands?
I had a few ideas on something that can make ocean bioms more intresting!
Mobs: the only ocean mob (or water mob for that mater) is the squid. I have a few ideas for more mobs: Crabs: don't hit you till you are in attacking range they do 3 hearts of damage and can hold you with their claws until you kill them. hit them to hard and they will hide in a layer of sand. drop crab legs (food) merfolk: attack in groups if you hit one the rest hit you only attacked when provoked. they use spears to kill you and are extreamly fast if you manage to get them on land they will be very weak. killing them will give you merfolk tail used to craft diving gear angry merfolk: attack unprovoked ocean zombies: zombies that spawn in coffins undersea, can swim and stay underwater without floating up rare drop: fins can swim as fast as you can and has the same stats as zombie manta rays: 7 blocks wide 4 long huge, does 5 hearts of damage but pushes you back 15 blocks, after that unless you walk up to it again it wont hit you.killing it (very hard to do) will give you 5 manta ray skin used to craft diving gear. fish: harmless come in groups of 20 manta ray eat them so where u find fish you find manta ray
Diving gear: after killing enough ocean mobs u can get diving gear including a diving helmet, fins, and an oxygen tank. diving helmet: increased breath 10 times only works if you have oxygen tank, crafting: x=redstone b= manta ray skin c=iron block d= gold bcb bxb bdb oxygen tank as strong as leather chain armor crafting: x=redstone l=leather armor i= iron block b= manta ray skin ixi ili ibi fins swim as fast as running: m= merfolk tail b=iron c=manta ray skin d=diamond cdc cdc cmc
ruins and trenches: their should be something interesting at the bottom of Oceans it would be nice to have trenches, big ravings containing many ocean mobs and ore and ruins: below ocean floor contains merfolk spawners, these merfolk will attack unprovoked so it is advised to come in with good gear. contains chests of diamond gold and iron and some eye of enders.
undersea coffins: coffins at the bottom of ocean that contain rather ocean zombies, or chests
Diving gear would never fit in with the game.
Your mob ideas are pretty good I just really don't like the idea of merfolk and ocean zombies, but that's just me.
Undersea coffins would be a bit strange if they were just there by themselves. If they we're found in underwater shipwrecks that'd be cool, and make them seem less out of place.
Other than a few flaws your idea is decent, just needs a bit more work.

please refrain from talking about the mod that might be counted as breaking the rule, ot: i dont like how much damage crabs do however its a good idea otherwise

Oceans aren't really that expansive. I think a larger problem stems from the fact that there are so many small "seas" that could barely classify as a lake. The mobs, I don't really see them having a point. Diving gear doesn't work in a game set before firearms, especially not the oxygen tank or fins. I don't mind more expansive ocean terrain, but you have to remember is that those things should be rare.
ruins and trenches: their should be something interesting at the bottom of Oceans it would be nice to have trenches, big ravings containing many ocean mobs and ore
I don't know about the trenches, but don't the forums have enough ravings? Now, for seriousness, it would be quite difficult making trenches have a higher concentration of mobs than normal ocean, because it's just a big cut in the earth. No special blocks or spawners or anything like that.

It's hard criticizing ideas when one is tired, so you'd better appreciate it when I criticize yours.

Back on topic, the only stuff I like it the undersea ruins, trenches, maybe underwater chests or coffins but scuba gear won't fit into the game.
