I also want this, and the same ability for stairs. (Think chamfered architecture features.) But this shouldn't be done through placement, as that's already tricky enough and changing that could easily break the already useful way of placing current half-slabs.
For sideways blocks and stairs turned on their side, they should be craftable on a one-for-one basis using one square of the player or crafting table crafting grid. (One for one, because all your doing to "craft" it is turning it sideways.) So you'd have a separate sideways half-block or stairs on the inventory menu. Likewise the sideways half-blocks could be converted back to normal ones via the same method.
No, this doesn't belong in Minecraft, and Jeb said so.
He clearly states that "Notch said if we wanted quarter blocks in the game, we would have made the world out of quarter blocks". The only reason why upside down stairs and slabs were ever added were to compliment the existing slabs and stairs already present. This means no thin walls, no sideways slabs, no "hallow blocks", corner stair blocks or any of those micro circuits mods.
Minecraft is fine without all that. If you have to have it, go get a mod developed. No support, this doesn't belong in Minecraft and the video is proof.

That's quarter blocks.

Allocators are no longer the future, we have Hoppers now. I still like them, though.
They are functionally the same. The 1/8ths block mod existed so you could make upside down slabs, right side up slabs, sideways slabs, corner stairs, furniture, etc. It's not all the same blocks, but the reason Notch and Jeb are against the 1/8th blocks mod apply to sideways slabs. They want to keep most of Minecraft in a block world. Sideways slabs deviates from that objective.
The reason, I'm guessing, they don't want to add quarter blocks is because it would essentially multiply world sizes by eight.
Also, regular slabs deviate just as much.
Do you have a heart attack when you see upside down stairs, or dragon eggs? Or tripwires?
No need to be snide. They are too the same principle. Sideways slabs aren't really slabs anymore. They don't preform the same function slabs were originally created to preform (provide walking elevation without requiring the player to jump over each block). Many people in this post have stated explicitly "These aren't slabs, they should be called panels". The same reasons you would add panels to the game are the same reasons you would add 1/8th blocks. Jeb has explicitly stated 1/8th blocks are probably never going to be added, so it stands to reason that neither will sideways half slabs/panels. Yeah, they are an aesthetic block and don't really need a function to get added. But it violates the core theme of Minecraft. You wouldn't add spheres into Minecraft, by that same token, you wouldn't add all these partial block permutations.

To be honest, I can't really think of too many times that I would decorate with sideways slabs.
I'd still like them, though.

They would be handy for extending patterns which are possible with (upsidedown) stairs and half-blocks. It's possible to make various open windows using those, but those windows can only be extended yea-far or have to end in certain places because there's no sideways half blocks to properly complete the pattern or fill in the gap between right-side-up and upside-down stairs.
It's not like there aren't good uses for them, but you'd have to look past what you're used to.
COMIC SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANS! On-topic, they should be a completely different block. Upside-down slabs already made it hard to place slabs over one another like this:
And this, if placeable using normal slabs, is just going to make it impossible.

i think the placement should be like some of the sideways slab mods ive seen...basicly if u place ur cursor on the center of the block its normal but if u place it on a edge it would make the slab bee there. also another use for it would be being able to make my house (more) of the grid! seriously...you can make it of the grid virticaly....mogang plz do horizontal...i want a house made out of half slabs! (less metirials needed) sooo mojang and should do it if they do i will
I see this potentially complicating the mechanics of placing slabs. Please flesh out your idea of how the mechanics would work. If you have too many options for the placement of a block, it could muddle the ability find the right spot on the block.
I don't see the purpose in having vertical slabs. I guess this would be useful for having interior designs by 'hiding' the block its placed on? I don't know if I would use this...
I too like the idea of 1/2 'panels'...but would also like all the other blocks to have 1/2 'slab' & stair equivalents.. eg Glass stairs, half slab gravel etc
A great post. This is something that has always crossed my mind but I have never thought to act on it. This will come in very handy for interior designing.
