A problem that I have heard from a lot of friends, and am now experiencing myself, is the when you build a base that is centered on an odd number of blocks, rather than even, it can be difficult to place a nether portal, while keeping the symmetry of the build in-tact.
My idea is that portals four blocks tall and three wide should be allowed (referring to the portal blocks, not the obsidian).
Anybody agree?

Simply don't put your portal in an odd-length room. Making them skinnier is not the answer, nor will it look any better in the room. Currently, it looks like a square:
As opposed to a skinny this thing that you suggested:
The first one, the current one, actually looks like a portal. The second one, the one you suggested, looks more like a purple door.
I'd honestly much rather see them be able to be built on their side, decreasing height, increasing length, and solving this problem at the same time.
Listen man, if you turn the portal 90 degrees it turns into a 1 wide portal that you have to walk around to the side to get in. It allows you to make it work with odd symmetrical rooms.

That would be physically impossible to make a square...

I know, but I'm going for aesthetics.

All you need is 10 blocks of obsidian and how is it odd? There is exactly 8 portal frame in the portal. So what do you mean by odd and unsymmetry?
The 'unsymmetrical' part came from when placing portals in rooms with an odd-numbered width, so the portal is off to the side of the room instead of the center. I support what the OP is saying, mainly because it's a very minor change that doesn't change the difficulty of the game at all, and instead just adds more creative options.
I support this. I want to put portals in Nether Fortress.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
The only thing is that I see problems with going through the portal. What size portal would appear on the other side? Could a small one link to a big one? etc. And resolving these issues would be a lot of work for a slight aesthetic touch.
The solution to your problem though is simple enough though.
You could even put another two on top to make it look like a big portal with a cross going through it. Get creative.

To read the haiku that you
Just finished reading
The only problem I could see with that is it making the game easier, as you wouldn't have to mine much obsidian to get to the nether.
