Hi, while messing around in the nether collecting gold ingots, a thought occured to me: I've collected quite a few gold swords now that I dont really intend to use. So my sleep deprived mind crawled to an idea. What if you could smelt down metal tools to recover some of the ingots? I feel that such an innovation would make hunting pigmen and zombies much more rewarding and give players more alternatives that do not enjoy mining. In order to prevent abuse the items should be at maximum durabillity of course. I suppose there might be an issue with item stacking when putting them into the furnace, so maybe just one item could be melted down at a time.
If anyone has made this suggestion before, let me know. I'm new to the forum.
I know it has been mentioned in another topic, but I'm not actually aware of anyone making a topic specifically for it. I would actually like to see this apply to all tools. Melt down metal tools, you get back the amount of ingots to make it -1 (except for shovels, which still give back one). Further, wooden tools should give back the same amounts in charcoal.

Unfortunately, that means that two wooden planks can be turned into a Wooden Shovel and then turned into Charcoal, when it would have normally required an entire log (four wooden planks) for the same result. It also means you can continue using shovels.
I think it would be better if tools smelted had a chance (equal to their durability, -10%) of dropping their material. If they used multiples of these materials, every single piece would have a separate chance. For example:
An Iron Shovel with 100% durability has a 90% chance of dropping 1 Iron Ingot.
An Iron Pickaxe with 50% durability has three chances (of 45%) of dropping 1 Iron Ingot, up to 3.
An Iron Shovel with 10% durability has a 9% chance of dropping 1 Iron Ingot.
Wooden Tools should be the same, but the chance of dropping charcoal should be quartered after initial calculations.

Maybe based on the percent of durability the tool you would get an amount of material back. For example: iron sword, made with two iron.
if 100 percent, you would get both iron back. If 50+ percent you would get one iron. If <50 percent then you would get nothing.
That's probably a better system, Jake. Then again, you can also use wooden tools as fuel directly now (supposedly) so I'm not sure how that factors into the balance either.
Maybe like this:
Iron Sword - 1 iron
Iron Shovel - Nothing
Iron Axe - 2 Iron
Iron Pickaxe - 2 Iron
I don't see how this could be abused, but it would have to be made so they have to be at 100% durability to do this. For wood tools it would be the same thing as above but in planks.

Well, that makes it a little unfair to poor ol' shovel, and also makes it a less than useful system. If you scroll up to my post, I suggested a system that would be unexploitable but still useful at lower durability. Metal from a sword doesn't exactly turn into dust when you try to melt it just because it's a little bit worn.

Recycling might actually offer another possibility. After gold nuggets were introduced, many people wanted similar for other materials. So, you could, rather than the materials themselves, have gold produce nuggets, iron produce scrap metal, diamond produce gem shards, stone produce smooth stone (the cost is you have to re-break it to make tools again), and wood...well, wood already burns, that's recycleable enough.
Good idea. But with furnace shift clicking would wooden tools go in the fuel or item to be smelted slot?
lol, technically speaking only metal can be smelted. If were talking about a way to reuse product from wooden tools then there would have to be a new device to break down the components instead of using the furnace. The same would probably be true with diamond tools really. That scrap metal idea isnt bad though. Gem shards too brings a few new possibilities to mind.

At that point, you'd be looking more at making a whole new object, though.

Anyways, shovel should give you zero, or clever people would time it so that they could have infinite shovels.
