Mhm, so recently we've been given a whole bunch of fantasy options, eg. enchanting, brewing, dragons.
The problem is that some of us prefer to play Minecraft as a medievally themed game, some of us prefer an industrial theme (with mods), and some of us want all the alchemy and magic we can get.
However, all the new content we seem to be getting is fantasy.
My proposal is: Give us the same content as before, just rebadge it to be more generically themed.
eg. instead of enchanting, let us surround tools with redstone dust in the crafting grid to boost their mining speed. That would give us a more generic feel, add a use to an ore many people don't already use, and allow us to play the game the way WE want, maintaining the sandbox gameplay, while still offering an RPG element.
Same with changing the iron block texture. Many people used it for postmodern creations before 1.0.0 and now they look pretty much horrible.
Brewing potions could probably be kept the same with only a minor retexture and name change (eg. Brewing Stand --> Distiller) & renaming potions to "drinks".
Note: I am NOT against taking Minecraft into more of an RPG, they just need to make their content more generic in the DEFAULT (not with texture packs) game so people can play the style they want. Like medieval games, excellent, use the content we have & you're good. Prefer magic, still works. This way, everyone would get what they want with only minor changes on Mojang's part.
I always thought enchantments were a lazy way of buffing weapons. If I could go back in time and take Jeb/Notch's place I would make it so swords crafted with blaze rods instead of sticks had fire aspect, you could make a diving helmet with iron and glass instead of having aqua affinity, etc. But alas, enchanting is already in the game, and many people are used to it, so I don't think it'll change.
Reputation++ for you. After the full 1.0 release, I felt like the "age of exploration" theme that previous updates was abandoned. I loved Beta 1.8, in contrast; the ravines, abandoned mine shafts, villages and strongholds made the world genuinely worth exploring (not to mention the larger biomes). And then came the potions, enchanting system and Nether fortresses (the whole purpose of which was to supply the needs of the brewing system) of 1.0...
If Mojang had balanced out the fantasy-RPG elements of 1.0 with a new redstone mechanism (like the ever-popular "Allocator" or "Fluid Grates" from the suggestions forum), or more options with minecarts, or anything vaguely industrial, I would have loved 1.0 as much as I did Beta 1.8 or 1.7.3.
Ever since the 1.2 updates have been out, I've played around with different mods the community has made. So far, my favorites are IndustrialCraft2 and Forestry. Both of them seem to capture what I've wanted so desperately out of Minecraft: the ability to manage systems that can change the world around you. Potions? That's nice, now take a look at my Nuclear Reactor...
Pistons were the first step towards an engineer's paradise of a game, now let's see more, Mojang.
Maybe if they released a language with a few of the renames you suggested? And an alternate default texture pack to put iron back to the way it was, or something.

Personally, I like the feel when I can make something slightly industrial, or oldschool, it gives me a warm feeling.. Anyway, I made a water elevator with signs, and water, and everything (derp) And I felt a sense of oldschoolness, I just want more industrial things, and more contraptions that arent crafted into items, and are crafted into actual more-than-1-block machines, I want more required working machines, mojang!
Fact is, if everything was generic it would be worse.
See, the vanilla game is actually fantasy; zombies, skeletons, exploding creepers, ghasts, the Nether, the End, Mineshafts, ect. These are actually all generic monsters, and theoretically you could name them "generic melee mob, generic ranged mob, generic suicide mob, generic flying mob, generic lava cave, generic boss room, generic structure, ect" because that's what they actually are, but would that make the game better? No. Just because it's fantasy doesn't mean it's bad. If I can also take this time to point out, theoretically we could be calling some drugs "potions" in real life. I mean, they're made the same way and do the same things, why not? It's just a name.
Your entire problem can be solved with a texture pack, preferably one that alters the language files. But it doesn't even need to do that, no, because then all you're complaining about is the name of the item, which is just silly.
Overall, adding a few minor elements of fantasy which in reality are just different ways of saying "buff makers" doesn't make the game "lean" towards fantasy any more than putting a book under my pillow makes me absorb the information. People say Minecraft leans towards fantasy or RPG with every update, I think they're just whining about absolutely nothing.
If Minecraft starts having magical faeries and a storyline, call me and we'll talk. But until then, no, you can live with something being named "enchantments".
The game retains it's sandbox element. You simply aren't able to work with every single thing in the world.
As for the iron texture, it looks more realistic and modern now than it did before.
All of the building I've seen still look just as good as they did before, if not better.
As an addendum, perhaps what we want isn't more "generic" content, but more balanced content instead. One update might include fantasy-RPG elements, the next might include a new redstone device. And there's no reason there shouldn't be some way to overlap the two, either. Minecraft is still in development, and there's plenty of room for more content.

I couldn't agree more. In fact it's so well said, i think you should......well...i'm not sure actually.....um....PANCAKES!

If we made the entire game more generic, it would lose all it's personality. I do not want that at all.
