Firstly I'd like to say that I searched for ideas about spears and spikes and none of them seem to be alive. However if I overlooked a living thread in my seach I am confident that my idea is unique enough to be worth your time.
Simple Explanation:
Spears are an unstackable weapon that can be thrown once and deals five damage with half the normal knockback of a sword. However it also causes the struck victim to be immobilized for five seconds. Spears would be irretrievable and would break on contact with the mob or upon contact with the block it lands on should it miss. Spears are not enchantable. Spears are crafted with two sticks and a flint.
Spike blocks are simply a dispenser with a single spear inside. When the dispenser is activated by redstone the spear will thrust outward by a full block and remain in that position until the redstone is deactivated, at which time the spear will pull back into the dispenser. Spike blocks will never have to be refilled however their draw back is that their range is only a block.
Crafting:
The crafting recipe would look almost exactly like crafting a shovel; except that the wooden plank block, cobblestone block, iron ingot, or diamond would be replaced by a single flint. (Two sticks and a flint for crafting).
This is a great idea. But I'm worried about one thing.
Flint isn't all that common. Unless of course you have a shovel enchanted with fortune.
Fortune shovels are nice. But my idea for the spears was mainly for the spike blocks. Only if you threw spears really often would you need alot of flint.
No, this is not a good idea. The spike block was conceived my Mojang to be a physical, craft able block, perhaps out of metal, that had directional spikes depending on how it was placed, wouldn't destroy items, and could be manipulated with pistons. This isn't a spike block, it's a spike trap. The two are not functionally interchangeable as this post suggests.
No support. Take away the spike block feature and this is a spear hurling thread identical to many.

Applications:
-Mob grinders
-Close range traps
-Adventure mode maps
-Defensive wall

Thats what keeps this balanced.
On a slightly related topic I believe that spike blocks were originally meant to be part of the game but were replaced with pistons.
I support this idea.
But I still support this. Mostly for the spears.
Thanks. I appreciate it.
I read the wiki and you're right I think.
And thanks.
