This isn't very original, but I haven't seen it posted anywhere yet.
I got this idea from Half-Life.
I have an idea for a new mob.
It does not move.
It hangs from the ceiling, with a string-like toungue hanging down.
If you run into the string (eg if you didn't see it) you will get stuck on it.
The barnacle will pull you up on it's toungue and eat you.
Each bite deals 4 (2 hearts) damage.
It has 1 (Half a heart) health.
Drops: String.
Spawns on Peaceful and up.
The toungue is difficult to see; similar to tripwire.
The body, however, is not. This is to give a warning to more
experienced players. The body looks like a red, breathing, blocky
slug. In Ocean biomes, it lays on the ocean floor and let's it's toungue
rise to the surface. Don't get your boat caught on it! It will eat it.
You can trick it by putting a block with physics (sand or gravel) into
it's toungue. It will pull it up instead of you!
It spawns during chunk generation- it can't spawn any other time.
It requires a dim light level (Below 10) to spawn during the chunk generation.
It would mostly be found in caves, or underneath mountains.
I think it would be pretty hilarious to run into one and go "OH, GOD. NO. Oh wait." And then hit it with your fist and drop back down
You do know that Mojang can't just add copyrighted material to Minecraft, right? They'd have to speak with Valve, and why would Valve let them ue it? Besides, I don't think that any creature from Half-life would really fit in Minecraft. At all.

Show me a copyright for "Barnacle" and I'll agree.
Also, Minecraft stole a lot of their stuff from Quake lore. (EG the Slip)
Tell me, what "fits in" to Minecraft?
If you give me a bunch of MMORPG type things, I don't like this game anymore.
I don't support, because it might be annoying that it will grab you to a cavern like a ravine and once you get stuck in to it,you kill it and you fall down to your death not knowing what thing lives up there in the darkness.
I thought this would be a suggestion for inanimate barnacles that just appear underwater here and there, and would provide some utility once collected by the player. If that was the case, I would've supported in a heartbeat. I don't like this as a mob though, mainly because it'd be rather annoying, and the fact that it's copied from Half-Life.

True, MMORPG stuff wouldn't really fit Minecraft, but I don't think that sci-fi monsters would fit either.
Minecrfat didn't steal the slip. The end may have been INSPIRED by the slip, being somewhat similar,
but it contains Mojang's own monsters and materials and the like.
You just copied the Barnacle from Half-life, its appearance, name and abilities completely
unchanged. Why don't they add, I don't know, the Eye of Cthulhu from Terraria to Minecraft?
It's not like there's a COPYRIGHT on eyeballs.
Came here thinking to be a smartass about Half-Life then I saw how this would work.... Uh...
This sounds like an okay idea as long as it's tongue only goes so far up in water, like imagine a barnacle in an ocean that's a rather large distance downwards, but in any case, I HALF-support this.
*laughs at own lame joke*

Actually, it has to spawn on Peaceful because it spawns during terrain generation.
