My idea is that when dirt or grass is stepped on, it would fall. Now read further and dont just reply hate right now.
Grass and dirt blocks would fall when you step on them. It would on work when there is no block below it. It would fall like gravel. This would also work for mobs too, serving as a good mob farm. Before you think about SMP traps, the block will not fall right after you step on them. They will fall after .5 seconds, meaning if you run, you wont fall. A fallling dirt block will act like gravel amd sand when falling on torches, slabs, etc.
This idea would allow you to:
A new mob trap.
A new SMP trap.
Down elevator.
And more!
Please comment, and give me suggestions to make it better.
You wont take fall damage from standing on the dirt when hitting the ground. Also, like I said, dirt would only fall when the dirt your on has an open spot below it.

It doesn't work like that in real life of Minecraft. If something below you falls and brings you with it you're going to take some sort of damage when you stop (if the fall is 3+ blocks). The way you put it makes it seem like you could be stuck at the height limit on a cobble tower without a pick and no 2 blocks deep water sources nearby then place some dirt down and fall without dying.
This would make it much harder to build because you couldn't make a dirt scaffolding.
No support.
Edit: I see that you think gravel should have the feature. Refer to the above statements.

You will. The entities fall faster than you. Even if they didn't, you would just go through them.

I haven't even bought MineCraft, I don't have the money...
In all seriousness, this is a joke of a suggestion. It would be a griefers' tool, it would be annoying, and you would end up falling into hidden caves/ravines all the time
