Here's an idea for you. How about a master crafting table? That is to say, a crafting table that's one tech upgrade above the standard crafting table and that is required to craft more advanced things.
In addition to more crafting slots, however, I think it would be neat if there were special "tool" slots in the table as well. So, if you want to craft something advanced you need to fill the tool slots with special tools and add the crafting ingredients in the correct pattern.
What would count as a tool? How about a welder (blaze rod + iron)? Or maybe a "hammer & nails" set?
I could see using this to craft vehicles. Maybe by drawing the appropriate chassis and attaching things like wheels (crafted separately) and an engine (crafted separately), you could build a submarine, an automobile, or even a tank. What about a flying machine? This could get really fun!
For wheels, I'd think adding the resource rubber (from rubber trees) to sticks would probably work. Maybe an engine would combine pistons with a furnace?
I bet I'm not alone in thinking it would add a lot of fun. Boats also don't "fit in" with the mining motif, but they're an excellent new addition that are very useful.
The thing that rocks about Minecraft is that is isn't a game about mining, or about adventuring, or building, or crafting, or killing monsters for XP. It's a little bit of everything rolled into one.
Just look at the way the overworld monsters look: Two undead things, a living monster that blows up to attack, one from another universe, and giant spiders. A total mish-mash of different ideas that aren't coordinated into a single theme, but each were added because they were simply fun.
I just twitched when you got the vehicles parts...
I'm not even sure what to say... vehicles are suggested all the time and they always get shot down, especially planes. I don't even think I need to explain why. It's like adding a machine gun to WoW or a wand to Call of Duty... it just doesn't belong.
Also, bigger crafting tables get suggested all the time. I foresee a lock in this thread's near future.

-vehicles, automobile, subs and, tanks would sort of ruin the feel of minecraft.

Do some research, even the smallest amount of research, and you will know that isn't true.
In any case, this idea seems rather similar to something I posted ages ago.
