I think Minecraft has a pretty decent potion system. It's useful and balanced. However it's balanced for standard minecraft survival gameplay, and minecraft is more than just now. It includes adventure maps, arcade games, and PVP sports.
Why not add the option of letting people fly in survival and adventure mode, to create a wider range of possible gameplay?
I suggest adding Flight Potions, which would only be accessible in creative mode. Admins and map designers would be able to give out drinkable versions, or place splash versions in dispensers.
Flight Potions would grant players in survival & adventure mode the ability to fly like people in creative mode for a brief period of time, and it would render them immune to falling damage. Like other potions it would have 3:00 and 8:00 duration varieties. The fall damage protection would wear off about 30 seconds after the flight power does, so you don't have to eye the clock too closely to avoid falling to your doom (unless you're really high up).
Why add flight potions? Just a few ideas:
*3D aerial combat, human vs. human or human vs. ghast/blaze
*Airborne sports, like Quidditch
*Aerial races and obstacle courses.
*Gives admins in creative mode a way to have other players keep up with them, without having to change their game mode.
*Makes it possible to have flying cities and structures players can access and travel between without needing nether travel, or unsightly ladders.
*3D Puzzles room and mazes
*Great for letting normal players take aerial tours of your server's landscape
Just to be clear. I think flying is very overpowered for normal gameplay. Which is why these potions would only be accessible to people in creative mode, who opt in to allowing it, and control exactly how many flight potions there are.

I agree with your idea.
Except with the bold thingy.
Minecraft survival is not balanced, it's hella easy.
But, anyway, the new snapshot will come with /fly commands on ssp.
Hey, I never said potions were perfect. I said decent. But they're useful for the effort required to brew them, and they don't grant any abilities that are too powerful. I'd rather have them as they are than not have them at all.
But this thread really isn't really meant to be a critique about the standard potion system. What about flying potions? That's the topic.

A number of these would need to have no time limit to be effective. A potion is fine but a block might work better. Say you place a block in the floor in a hall, you can't jump to pass it and when you cross over it you are allowed to fly. the same block can be set to at least 3 settings. On, Off, and Temporary.(why I said at least 3) temporary would be for ways for people to fly up to floating cities or other things in a short distance, but little else. They could not start flying from anywhere like with a potion and would be forced to stay within the bounds of the designated area. Obviously more than 3 options could be added if additional times were reasonable.

Someone hasn't seen the original use for Cauldrons (a potion system MUCH better to what we have now)...
Also, agree with you. Cauldrons were 1000% better.
