I think Crossbows would be a nice addition to Minecraft.
They would be like regular bows, but do more damage, like seven or eight hearts. (Not hits, full hearts). However, they would take much longer to reload (say, three to five seconds) and then they'd also take longer to shoot (another two seconds or so).
They would also have the same durability as bows.
Crossbows would be less affected by gravity than bowshots are, because obviously crossbows have a lot more power to them. This pretty much means you'll need to aim upwards over distant targets much less. They would also have a beginning knockback of two blocks, meaning that a hit by one will knock you back two blocks.
Crossbows would also have special arrows (bolts) that have a different crafting recipe. These bolts would need to be crafted by putting an iron ingot on top of a stick. These would also be crafted in sets of two, not four.
Something like that.
The crossbows themselves would be crafted like this:
Crossbows would have the same enchantments as bows do, but without the Power enchantment. (They do enough damage as it is)
They would also not get the Infinity enchantment, instead they get an Enchantment that speeds up their reloading time. (can't think of a name right now for it)
If anyone has any other suggestions for crossbows, please, tell me. Also, if there's a mod for this, also please really tell me. I would love that.
as far as i can tell 1 block is a meter or about 3 feet so if there's a 2 block knockback wouldnt you be thrown back 6 feet? im pretty sure crossbows dont do that. and as for the bolts, they would be really expensive, i think you should get more than 2 for each time you craft bolts. or you could just have crossbow bolts be made like arrows without feathers. all in all i think its a good idea and would make an excellent edition to minecraft.except maybe we can change the knockback to 0... cause crossbows were just like rifles today and they ussually dont throw you back 6 feet. k?

I know they wouldn't really do that, but you can't really make swords out of diamonds, can you? The argument of realism is not a good one for Minecraft, because it's so unrealistic already. And, the same thing happens when you sprint-hit something with a sword. They get blown a good two to five blocks back. Hitting something with a sword while sprinting shouldn't send something fifteen feet away, should it?

The reason the bolts are so expensive is because it's already a reasonably overpowered weapon as it is, there needs to be setbacks for it. I chose to make it have expensive arrows, and because I don't think have a flint tipped arrow would be as powerful as an iron tipped one. Besides, honestly I get more iron than flint in my worlds.
I dont really like the idea of using 1 iron per 2 arrows, it should use the same arrows as bows.
Well, this is like saying that you should be able to use musket-balls for a machine gun. They're different things and are designed for different ammunition. Also, read what I said above to mrgflan. There needs to be things that keep it from being too overpowered, I think this was a good way to do that.
Besides, if you ever actually looked at a crossbow, you would see pretty obviously that regular arrows wouldn't work for them. I would actually know, I'm currently designing and building my own.
The problem is that this idea is one of the most overly suggested ideas on the forum already, alongside with horses.
There is a new topic about it every single day, you could just post feedback on other topics.

Oh, I didn't really know they were that over-mentioned. I don't really go into the "Suggestions" section that often. I just was building my own crossbow, and I thought of the idea of it for Minecraft.
Guess I should of looked at the other Suggestions some, then.

Other then that, Brilliant idea!

Well, if you have a better idea feel free to tell me. As I said, I am very open for suggestions.
And crossbows aren't exactly symmetrical, are they?

But, anyway, I like it.
