Well to go along with my last post about Dive Damage, why not add a Diving Helm, a helmet that allows you to breath underwater. It's a pretty simple idea and I've already thought up the blueprint for it. Top Row: Iron Ingot, Leather, Iron Ingot; Middle Row: Iron Ingot, Glass, Iron Ingot; Bottom Row: Glass Bottle, Wool, Glass Bottle.
The idea is the Iron Ingots in the diving helmet acts as enforcing the glass at the center, while the leather encases the glass. The two glass bottles acts as air containers and they will slowly fill with water, limiting the amount of time you can be underwater where as the wool acts as a filter and increases the amount of time you can be under water. The initial helmet without the two bottles and wool would be just as good as an iron helmet but with a glass piece covering the eyes.
So either the helmet will be destroyed upon the filling of the two glass bottles and you will immediately have the normal air that you would have if you just dove underwater without the helmet and that's to let you get out of the water if your down deep enough. Or you can take off your helmet for a short period of time and place the helmet in the 2x2 square and the two glass bottles underneath the helmet replace. Then bringing a few glass bottles with you to replace the two that got filled which are are automatically placed into your inventory if you have room, and if not they drop on the ground.
You'll also need to replace the filter after a number of uses and I'm not sure how to go about that, but this is the general idea which I think it is a good one, you'll be able to mine things underwater for a lot longer to instead of going up to the surface after only breaking a block or two.
It is a pretty solid idea, but then that basically elminates the need for the Respiration enchantment on helmets and makes it much easier for people to spend time underwater than the current system. I've never found the need to stay under water mining for any extended period of time either.

Enchantment, I didn't know there was one for that, but because you need to make an enchantment table and that's a lot harder to make then my idea and because enchantments are random, this is an easier substitute.
Ah i see. Well I think that is kind of my point. It just seems TOO easy for me since you could make one probably a couple nights into the game without too much trouble
Just brainstorming a bit more, but why not replace my idea of the two iron ingots on the top row with two glowstone and it makes a sort of head light...and this can also be used in caverns to help you in the dark with no touches. Enemy's will still spawn but you have a mining helmet.
I know the thread said one idea at a time, but you can have one helmet with the mats I suggested to make the water breathing helmet and then a mining helmet excluding the bottom row and replacing the two iron ingots on the top with glow dust.
Also I understand what you said about it being too easy to make, but more then not water is all around you and it's just that much harder because you need to replace items on the helmet.
That would be a cool idee with the glowstone and make it take longer to achieve. But I think that the moving light source is an in-game issue
Oh, well that's probably something that they need to figure out. It would help them in the long run. Not to say Minecraft isn't already a good game with what they have.
Of course, the headlight one introduces the problem of dynamic lighting all over again, so I'd say it wouldn't be a good idea. I think it should be more expensive somehow too, like you need to have some sort of potion inside the bottles just during the recipe, because right now, assuming this should be about equivalent cost to a respiration helmet, and right now it isn't.

The lighting is for when you're underwater, but both should be included into the game so you have the option of having light while your underwater mining or not.
I'd also like to bring up where I got this idea and that's from Metro 2033, the gas mask they had in that game was neat.
the blueprint for it. Top Row: Iron Ingot, Leather, Iron Ingot; Middle Row: Iron Ingot, Glass, Iron Ingot; Bottom Row: Glass Bottle, Wool, Glass Bottle.
Not only is there the Respiration enchantment, there's also the Water Breathing potion effect, which hasn't even been implemented yet. They should add that as a brew-able potion before making something like this. Nice stroke of creativity, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it should be added.

No, water is still there, you just can see more from a distances when you're deeper down.
