How about, instead of xp, we would have a new ore called Mythril?
Each mythril ore drops 1 mythril shard, that equals one enchanting level.
Also, hostile mobs also have a chance (maybe 10%) to drop mythril.
I just think this is more fitting than spending XP...
EDIT: there would be a mythril slot on the enchanting table, you put the mythril there and it enchants.
I think that's weirder than the current "a sense of magical affinity that you get from achieving daunting tasks such as a successful mining trip or a victorious battle" which is currently called experience/magic orbs.
Why does it feel weird? It's just like a furnace, except that you use mythril instead of coal and it's instant.
It'd be interesting to have an ore that adds an extra magic dimension for enchanting or another process, but the EXP system as of late just works too well and is way to complex to throw out for such a simple solution. It would be interesting to, instead, have something like Mythril that acts as a storage device for experience.
Its an interesting concept I must give you that. But I don't think it will be implimented for two reasons.
1. Minecraft has been going with the exp cost for enchanting for a while now.
2. Minecraft is not an rpg therefor if the enchanting is changed the levels/exp will have absolutely no purpose.
I hate it when people say that. I'm not sure what it has to do with this, though...
Anyway, I don't support this. The "experience" you get from a "grueling" fight with a monster or a long, hard spelunking expedition and pouring said experience in to your equipment to make it stronger seems more interesting than sticking pieces of a random metal (and a common one at that) to make it stronger.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?

I understand; its said much too often. I just felt it was the best way to express that exp and enchanting shouldn't be changed so drastically.
