In the 1.3 snapshots, you can place a half-slab on the upper or lower half of that block space based on where you right-click on a neighboring block. I believe trapdoors should function in a similar way, this way people can utilize trapdoors more effectively and everyone can be happy.
That actually doesn't seem too bad. I think the positioning has to do with how they swing open, though. So if you placed a trap door the other way, it would open downwards, which isn't generally the desired effect. I personally wouldn't mind either way, but it could be an issue for some players.
I know. I'm just saying that some people might find that either aesthetically non-pleasing, or complain about it being unrealistic. As I said, it doesn't bother me. Just pointing out the problem some might have.
If placed in the upper half then it would swing down, but it would take up the same position and location as a lower trapdoor.
When they first announced trapdoors, everyone assumed this was how they'd work. It was so disappointing. Anyway, I support your idea. I wonder if the metadata is sufficient? That seemed to be an issue with doors.
Also, it's either half block or slab, not half slab. A half slab would be a quarter block...
They've been informally called half-slabs for a very long time. Before Beta came out, the game wouldn't tell you an item/block's name when you hovered the mouse over it. This is the main reason names such as half-slabs and reeds have stuck around, despite being technically incorrect.
